How would i go about making some old school leads?

Im listening to Sessions Seven and a remix of "Dance The Way I Feel" by Armand Van Helden is on there. I've never really had a good listen to his music, not sure why, but i like the synths he has in it ad i wouldn't my trying to make something similar!

what i hear at 1:00 is a sampled sound - i have always thought that it was done with a piano chord or progression sampled and timewarped removing the attack..
