How to input/play/read midi files in ZynAddSubFX?

Is it possible to get ZynAddSubFX to play midi files? If so, how?

Also, will it create and save in midi?

I am using ZynAddSubFX 2.2.0 with Windows XP.

(I think ZynAddSubFX is an excellent program, with many possibilities I have not explored yet.)

Not directly, ZynAddSubFX responds to midi notes/control values, but it does not play midi files itself.
I am unsure what options there are for standalone ZynAddSubFX under windows

Nope. (Zyn is a synthesizer and having these capabilities are outside the project's scope)

you need a host sequencer, and load it as VST

Thanks for the replies.

I have done some more thinking and research and realised that one solution is something that seems to be known generically as a "Virtual Midi Cable".

I tried loopMIDI (http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/loopMIDI.html)and got it to work just *once* playing midis on Anvil Studio 2012 and listening in ZynAddSubFX. Now I cannot get it to work again. (I have tried re-starting the computer.)

I am now trying LoopBe1 (http://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html) and have it working (playing midis on Anvil Studio 2012 and listening in ZynAddSubFX). Hoping I can get it to continue to work.

I have not tried getting midi output from ZynAddSubFX and saving as midi file yet. (The purpose of this would be to make my "live" notes input into ZynAddSubFX editable so I can have a reminder of what I played, and be able to tweak it.)

I have not looked into "host sequencer"s yet (or maybe that is a name for what I am doing with Anvil Studio).

OK, let me get this straight... You have Anvil Studio...

If this is the case you don't need an additional program (virtual midi) to connect to ZynAddSubFX.

As I read from the website for Anvil Studio (http://www.anvilstudio.com/flist.htm) among the features are:

- Compensation for MIDI and Audio device latency and working with low-latency ASIO and Virtual Instruments.
- ASIO, VST, VST-Instrument, and Automation support with optional Pro-Mix accessory.

This means this program IS a host, and can load VST Instruments or plugins. These are .dll files (not executables) that are called by the host, and loaded in memory. The transmission of MIDI data between the host and the plugin does not need any other program.

There is a VST version of ZynAddSubFX, which I also worked on, by helping to port it from Linux. I believe the latest one at the moment is ending in 480beta for windows XP 32-bit and ending in 490alpha for Win7.

You basically need to create a folder in your C drive called C:\ZynAddSubFX.
Yes it has to be in C:\ and it has to have that exact name... I may fix that in future versions if I have the time. Then copy the banks and presets foders to that folder. Then put the ZynAddSubFX.dll in the folder where Anvil Studio looks for vst plugins, or point Anvil Studio to the dll file.

The first time that ZynAddSubFX.dll is loaded inside a host, it will be upset that it didn't find a configuration file, but IF C:\ZynAddSubFX folder exists, it will automatically create the config file for you, and will find it next time.

Other setup details you will find in the readme.txt or instal.txt in the archive that comes with version 480beta of the VST.

Good Luck,

LE: never mind.... it seems it needs some payware addon to load vsts... too bad

Download a real host like Podium Free:
