oops. I guess I mean "AU" instrument? I don't do mac. But I'm working with someone who does, and I want to suggest some free, COOL, very modern (not old sckool analog VA) hip sounding, FREE synth instruments to play with to broaden their pallet. I know a million for the PC, not so knowledgable on the mac side.

I'm seconds away from pressing the "Plug-ins Search" button shown above, but I want to get some real world feedback and suggestions from people actually USING MAC freebies. "This is great, that, not so much" kinda thing.
REMEMBER: the more modern and newer the better. none of the old analog VA style stuff

Also CM magazine has ZebraCM, and DuneCM for mac osx.
Also Garageband comes with some au instruments, which the mac user should have installed.
While slightly limited in tweaking ability.
If stacked they can sound as good as any modern synth imo.

Automat, as mentioned, is one you should definitely look at. Then obviously there's Tyrell, but that may be too old school for your tastes (albeit, a very new and very terrific instrument). Also, Reaktor player comes with some nice ensembles, and don't forget to get the free MikroPrism as well.
And last (for drum sounds) Minispillage, a genuine Mac exclusive, and a great one at it.

hahahahaha yeah it just hit me that TYRELL is also on MAC. like duh! it's a basic VA but has a lot for great patches for it. Thanks for reminding me.

EDIT: wait, found it seconds after I posted this. Will check it out.

I thought about Crystal, but nothing in the presets jumped out at me as being bleeding edge modern

One of the very best free synths you can get today is Bazille... Truly remarkable sound quality, feature-wise there is nothing like it and for over a year and for at least some months from now, it will remain free... As modern and interesting as you can find... even though it is in alpha state, it is solid and completely useable.

Just did this using the rather unique step sequencer in Bazille
