An example of what I'm after is in the song below, listen to the trippy vox 2:05 onwards.

What a classic tune by the way

I know I could just automate everything manually in FL Studio's event editor by switching volume to 0 wherever desired but that is time consuming and unintuitive. Can you use a midi controller to trigger the gate by pressing a key? I'm sure there's a way.

First off mate LOVE The ORB been a huge fan for years. As for their gating effect they probably used a side chain. One thing you can do is use what is called a Midi Gate. I use it all the time. It's especially easy to do in Cubase. I don't know my way around FL studio enough to tell you how to do it there but basically what it does is allows you to use midi note on/off to open and close the gate. That simple! Let me know if you can't find a decent tutorial. I'll put one together for you. In the mean time see if this gets you on the right path.

yeah if you're looking for hardware something like this will do the trick

I really doubt this would be much use for rhythmic gates. The gate in that unit is designed to silence the pauses between sound (to eliminate background noise). Get a gater VST and automate the automation. You'll save yourself one hundred dollars and save yourself the hassle of another outboard unit, cables, patching, latency, sidechain routing, etc.

LOL ^^ this is how it was done before software son. Ya use the side chain on it and feed a rhythmic signal through it. No latency. It's how the Orb did it originally.

last I heard StormGate 3 was not free. It's built into FL Studio anyway why get a plug in for it?

Yes, I know, I use a similar compressor in my setup (very useful!) but there is the latency of the signal chain. Anyways, my point is that there are many easy ways to do it in software, for free. The old original hardware won't sound any better when gating (cutting the volume sounds like cutting the volume), so for someone who isn't trying to achieve this with hardware alone the best advice would probably be to use software.

Try these out, ive used them before, the latter being the quickest and easiest

Free "stormgate1" version, or volume shaper from cableguys would do it as well
