Is there a way to enter midi notes with mouse into daw as if it's a midi controller?

Does anyone know of a way to use the mouse clicking to enter real-time midi notes into the piano roll while the daw is recording? What I mean is I load up my Sonar Home Studio 6 XL, I load a VST synth (Dune CM) that has a keyboard inside of it to play notes, and then I record enable the synth and hit record. After I hit record is there a way I can just click the mouse onto the piano roll's keyboard or Dune CM's keyboard to record midi notes in real time? I'm not talking about putting midi notes on the piano roll event area, but rather clicking the actual keyboard in the piano roll or VST to enter the midi notes.

Reaper has a 'Virtual Midi keyboard' which can be used to record Midi notes.

If you want to stay with another host maybe try this (+ virtual Midi drivers like MidiYoke), haven't tried it myself though.
