Hi everybody

i am "dreaming" of extracting a great nylon guitar sound from a friend s
Yamaha MOX for use in my daw.
i have posted for that in the hardware forum but as i am among
other sequencers also a basic user of Live on a laptop i wonder if it
would be possible to do that with SAMPLER (and a line audio jack ?)
if so, how simple would be the procedure and would the sound be
reproduced with more or less quality than with a hardware tool.

I don't use Ableton so my answer isn't specefic, but all DAWs are basically samplers, so the answer is yes!

You should create a MIDI track to trigger the MOX with long notes on various keys at various velocities. How many depends on how accurate you want the end result to be.

Then create an audio track and route the MOX to its input.

Then just record it.

You'll end up with one, long audio file wich can be chopped up into individual notes. These individual notes can then be loaded into a sampler and key-mapped, velocity switched etc.

That's about it really.

Andywanders has pretty much nailed it. Im a sampling novice but thats pretty much how I'd do it in Ableton. Once you have the audio file and chopped it up into individual parts you basically drag the lot into Sampler (I think) which will create the patch for further tweaking. Im being vague as Ive only done this once or twice but google it and you'll find heaps of walk throughs - particularly on Youtube.

Its odd how modern software samplers don't sample as such , you record the audio in your DAW then load . drag or drop the sample into the sampler

Ableton can split an audio file by detecting the starting transient and will then map the split samples across the keyboard in Simpler.
I dont know if this feature is avaible in the lite versions though.

So you could record one long sample with various notes/phrases and automatically split and map it.

Probably why they dont do it then.
IL Directwave can sample external signals and you can load VSTs to rip/sample the sounds. very handy fro ripping demos.
