I think this one would serve you well:

http://www.blaukraut.info/

It has fxb presets coming with it and there are several banks available here on kvr for it.

The developer has also fx in beta that you can download here

Great sound, free and stable !

I forgot to mention I use a mac!

Sorry . If I had a mac and some cpu power I would go for the free Tyrelln6 as it sounds impressive both modern and classic sounds . But I 'm no pro : )

DIVA & ACE layer both together. Run them both though an effect like Filterfreak to enhance the bass and fatten it up.

Tyrelln6 is free and easy to run.

That sounds like a Minimoog. It's easy to get close with NI's Monark for that sort of sound - No layering or even compression required. (But I suggest finding a higher quality recording of the song on Youtube if your aim is to actually copy the sound).

It's just a standard saw bass. Try a 3 osc saw with some Feedback type B to take some squelch off the resonance. Start with all the controls at 12 o'clock except attack and noise, stick the cutoff down to 9 o'clock, then tweak the decays at around 10 o'clock. You might look at adding some tape colour and a bit of EQ if you were determined to copy it as exactly as you could.

You should hear that Monark will get you most of the way there with nothing else than some simple tweaks. Monark takes most of the effort out of these sorts of sounds now. :)

TAL Bassline, freeware both for Win and MAC :)

sounds like a moog source, same used on new order's "blue monday"
best bet for a the closest sound on a mac is prob Artura's Minimoog V.
HW SYNTHS [KORG T2EX - AKAI AX80 - YAMAHA SY77 - ENSONIQ VFX]
HW MODULES [OBi M1000 - ROLAND MKS-50 - ROLAND JV880 - KURZ 1000PX]
SW [CHARLATAN - OBXD - OXE - ELEKTRO - MICROTERA - M1 - SURGE - RMiV]
DAW [ENERGY XT2/1U RACK WINXP / MAUDIO 1010LT PCI]

Curve 2 CM also has an almost identical preset that would be your cheapest high quality option imo. Synthmaster also has a preset very similar to that by insignia called moogmarkI.

I stumbled upon the old Renegade plugin from Q Sonique in my folder recently. It is pretty cool for synth bass sounds, not least thanks to its three complete oscillators :) Unfortunately it does not have semitone tuning, but for bass and lead sounds it is very nice.

Q Sonique also has a dedicated bass synth, but I never tested that one...

Bassically, synth bass sounds are one of the simpler tasks for synths, so most good multi-osc synths should give you decent synth basses, not least because with low frequencies you don't need the latest technology, anyway. Aliasing doesn't seem to be an issue.
I use mostly TAL's Elek7ro for synth basses.

was made by tervor horn on a minimoog.
it's a simple funky moog bass. i make these type of basses all the time in diva and monark (the 2 synths i'd reccomend) .
3 osc at different octaves, filter modulation and just above mid resonance .

Well, if one already has Diva or Monark anyway, fine. But if not, I don't think there is a point in getting either just because of such a simple bass patch. Freeware does the trick...

i don't know any good freeware moog filter.
in this case it is eaxctly the type of scenario - mid resonance with punchy modulation- which will give a plasticky VA result on a non 0dff.
subtle difference enough to ruin the impact of a sound in a mix (btw i used tal elektro too before diva came out, it was my fav softsynth at the time )
most 80s sounds are simple...but they had the luck of having great 0df filters back then (an analog filter is a 0dff)
imo that alone made their synth sounds better than the plasticky sound of 1997-2010 VAs and sosftsynths.
now softsynths have 0df "analog" filters too...and is the 80s all over again.

You might not get 100% identical sounds with freeware, but you won't get it with commercial synths, either, because you don't know which settings they used on the original.
I have never tried that specific synth bass as I don't like it, but I am sure you could do something very similar using TAL's free Noizemaker, which also has a 0df LP filter.

I would also think you can get pretty close with freeware, i mean there's nothing "magic" about that sound. Sounds neat, but at that time the productions weren't really what they are today. Should be nice to replicate though, as there's not really much if any effects on it.
