I'm curious as to what is available currently. Feel free to mention whatever (free and up) I'm willing to demo anything. Just looking for a good virtual saxophone.

I'm amazed that there seems that nobody put out a "Brass off" VST yet

Most detailed Sax reproduction would probably be achieved via PM + windcontroller. WIVI saxes are good.

Samplemodeling has nailed the tone of real saxes with their hybrid sampling technology and you won't get any existing PM to achieve such realistic timbres. I believe samplemodelling also works with wind controllers.

...and they sound pretty weak, then better use some good soundfonts...
All my attempts to integrate some DSK saxes into my songs failed because it sounded too artificially... I'm currently experimenting with the DSK tuba but it sounds pretty lifeless without any articulations...

Many people praising also Mr. Sax (Samplemodeling). All the other stuff like Linplug Saxlab sounds too artificial. But it's true, without a wind controller it's very hard to play. This working with key switches is not some of the most intuitive things and needs a lot of programming work.
My attempt with a Sax was with the Kontakt library. It works for very easy stuff but for Smooth Jazz etc. with dynamic playing etc. such a wind controller is a must have (in combination with some of the Samplemodeling libraries).
Here I used the Alto Sax from the Kontakt library:

..for only $20 you get a really awesome sax (Kontakt required). I don't know if it's realistic enough for you sure.

2 free ones that might or might not be good enough. They tend to wander about the notes.

11 free ones for Kontakt just go down to Reed, none on the level of the pro ones mentioned above.
