Higher ohm = more treble, which is why you (generally) use 250k for singles, and 500k for hummers. It's a fairly cheap and easy mod which can have huge effects; a lot of people use a 250k pot on a JB, and different pots on neck vs. bridge pups. Note that it's possible to wire in a parallel bypass resistor on a 500k to effectively turn it into a 250k, so it's not much of a trigger to pull. Happy hardware hacking!
