Still trying to get it right. Wayyyy too many drums. Let's party like it's 1991!

Not much love 1991 then - the age of James Brown samples and over blown drum arrangement
I tend to struggle getting much response these days. Maybe it's time for a musical hiatus in search of inspiration?`

It does sound a little rhythmically dated. Maybe listen to Kraftwerk, Squarepusher and other beat pioneers.

It's supposed to sound dated. It's a tribute to a style of r&b popular in 1987-1993. Kraftwerk and Squarepusher has no similarities to New Jack Swing.fastlanephil wrote:It does sound a little rhythmically dated. Maybe listen to Kraftwerk, Squarepusher and other beat pioneers.

Maybe listen to some Hendrix and other Guitar Legends. Only joking ...
I think the mix balance could be more like this Bobby Brown Track. Make the kick and Snare more equal to each other in volume. More reverb on the Orchestra Hit etc. If anything, the sounds seem about right but the Mix itself is not quite there yet.

Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

Thanks.
You're right about the reverb on the hits. They both come from my Roland XV50 and I still need to get to gripes with the effects section. Operating the module is fiddly to say the least
Volume levels are hard to get right mainly due to all the drums that come from different sources. Making New Jack isn't done by just loading a Battery kit - I'll have another look at the mix quality
The BB track is nicely mixed whereas I was probably more inspired by the 12" single versions at the time. Seduction's "Two To Make It Right" has a rather over exaggerated intro and I love that stuff!
