Spare a thought for the VFX though....It just Fizmo'ed out. Just like that.

I knew someone who bought an Ensoniq VFX at the time. The sequencer had bugs and kept crashing,so I guess news got around and it fizzled out.

I always wanted to have the ESQ-1 (and later the VFX). Never got round to it.

I have a Morpheus - I did get the impression that the Roland was a fairly standard RoMpler so they are very different..

re comments about Z plane filters - I think the ones on the Morpheus (and possibibly the UltraProteus) are different - I cannot remember the detail now but the Z plane filters on the other units aren't the same..

the Morpheus is a bit of a pain to edit - I have an editor built for Windows 98 - but it still works on Windos 7 - just.

the Morpheus can do something akin to wave sequencing - by scanning through a numbe of adjacent samples...

alot of the filters aren't so fantastic - and as I've found with other hardware that can morph the filter type you can get some really unpleasant sounds ..or really boring ones.

I've heard some stellar demos of the Morpheus with new sounds created but unless you really are willing to put the time in it sounds like a not very exciting, limited and dated ROMpler..

I'm still hoping one day I'll have the time and talent to take it beyond the half dozen or so presets I've created with it...

But the JV-2080 is far from standard. For a ROMpler ( I really hate that word and its connotations) it's one of the more advanced synth engines. It may not have Emu's Z-plane filters but it has other synthesis goodies. It's an incredibly deep synth.

I have a Morpheus and a JV-1080. Given the choice between those two, I would choose Omnisphere.

(To bring up my personal opinion in this topic)

In my opinion they both have got their pros and cons. I actually would just go for the Morpheus but it's really kind of hard to get, at least over here. It's slim and compact and it has a very specific sound. I like the one from Roland too because of the solid and rich sound and that's the one I will buy in the end because it's easier to get. The best case would be to own and use both because they complement each other very well.

The initial point of this whole thing for me btw was listening to projects where those Sound Modules were used and I just decided that this is the sound I need in my projects. I like how they sound right out of the box.
I don't want to brag but I've got a very good ear and the details in the sound output of these devices really convince me. I wanted to combine those with some decent software to round it up because there is really some good software as well and one can really gain a nearly perfect setup when disregarding the obvious camps like "software vs. hardware" and just going for the best sound and efficiency.

I've owned both a Morpheus and a P2500 and I think the latter is a much better choice over the Morpheus, it still has plenty of Filters but on top of that is a lot easier to edit and has a great Sequencer for improvising. It's still a bit of a pain to edit sounds though, it's worth spending a good few hours setting up some templates with Knob mappings as starting points. I do love the sound of E-MU synths and samplers but I've finally let go of them 1 by 1.

I will take it a step further and actually silence certain sounds certain rack units make... sounds like the shakuhachi sample, orch hits, helicopter sounds....many a tear will be....spared!
