Apparently there was a Paul Simon tribute on TV recently. I wonder if anyone did a cover of The 59th Street Bridge Song?

It starts out well...but then:
Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last
Just kicking down the cobblestones
Looking for fun and feeling groovy
Ba da-da da-da da-da, feeling groovy
Yes boys and girls, once upon a time certain young people used the phrase 'feeling groovy'...

Miss my head, miss my heart, miss my lungs
Be what you want to be
Watch what you want to see
Killed for fun
Down a hole, up a rope
Down some pills, up some hope
This karma machine only takes quarters
New age soldier, new age soldier

Joni Mitchell's song "Big Yellow Taxi" contains the following recurring line:

"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

I'm sorry, but while you can put up buildings, you can't put "up" a parking lot. Buildings are typically tall, compared to a person, and it makes sense to refer to putting them "up". Parking lots typically have no height at all. So, it makes no sense to refer to putting "up" a parking lot. I know this is a classic and beloved song for many, but that line always makes me cringe.

This line would have made far more sense:
"They paved paradise, now it's a parking lot"

That would be a "parking garage", which would have made sense, but it's too many syllables for her line. She's highly regarded as an excellent song writer, but I think she was just being sloppy when she wrote that particular line.

She is an excellent lyricist - it's not being sloppy, it just scans better as "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot". "Now it's a parking lot' just doesn't work. Poetic license :) (That being said personally I think it's one of her worst songs but I guess she had to make a few poppier tracks to make some money once in a while - and it is intended as kindof a humorous song anyway)
