I asked them and they're contemplating a newer version, but there's no concrete plans at the moment. Yes, definitely. iPads can be used as instruments inside DAWs, providing they can recognise it.

Absolutely! I just connect my iPad Air 3 to my MOTU M4 via the Roland UM-One Mk II and a lightning camera kit. Then I set up a MIDI channel for each audio unit instance in Audiobus or AUM and have Renoise or something sequence it.
