What's new in crusher-X 9 ?

accSone invented the Grain Life-Time (GLT) System to let you create and control granulized Percussion Sounds. crusher-X 9 can now control the lifetime of each grain with a full modulation set. That means once you enable the G-Life Grain Modulation, the GLT system controls the time a Generator is "alive" after the first Grain was "born". And - "Sorry Mr. Grain" - if your life-time has been reached, your're killed! But don't worry - you can be "respawned" with a press of a button, via MIDI or via Quantization or via Audio triggers (from the Life-Input or the Sidechain-Input):

Image

Why we need an extra Sidechain Input for a granulator? It's an unique opportunity for additional grain modulations (think in the direction of e.g. modulate the grain tune with the audio of the Sidechain), Trigger Grain creation (control the Life-time of a Grain with the Sidechain envelope):

Image
crusher-X 9 introduces Sidechain Grain control

And the Sidechain can also be used as a source for GCOs (Grain Controlled Oscillators): Heads up! Grains can now coming in from the "side":

crusher-X 9 introduces new Sidechain GCO Modes

Talking about Grains is also talking about Generative Music: Combining the Grain generation with your MIDI setup? With the new Grain Controlled MIDI (GCM) functionality you open the door to generative music with just one click: Enable "Grain to MIDI Note" and let your external MIDI Devices create the Grains according to the crusher-X unique Grain Modulation algorithms. And if the DAW doesn't support an easy way to get MIDI out of the track (normally they don't)? Just use the internal MIDI Output-Device selector from crusher-X:

And as we're talking about Grain Modulation - long awaited, now arrived: Two Global Modulation Matrices (GMMs) with each 4 modulation slots guaranties the craziest modulations ever. Each fader parameter of the Grain Modulation can be targeted and the applied modulation is shown on each targeted fader in a cool way:

Image
crusher-X 9 introduces adds 2 Global Grain Modulation Matrices (GMMs)

And regarding the G-Life (GLT System) Modulation mentioned above: We made the current "age" of the Grains available as a modulation source! This enables you to create unbelievable Grain Percussion streams developing over time:

Image
Modulate Grains with their "age"

And the same G-Life modulation can be added as Scanner modulation source for each Step or Spline:

Image
Scan the Step (and Spline) Modulation with the Grain "age"

Unreal: Use a "Grain launch" to step thru a Spline or Step Modulation - that is why we introduced the Grain Controlled MIDI (GCM) functionality. Now the time has really come to explore the world of Generative Music! Need more "percussive" Grains for this? The unique Window Tilt function squeezes and tilts the Window function in real-time. Window Tilt is also controlled by the morphing system:

Image
crusher-X 9 can bend the Grain Window in real-time

And we're making things easier to play with: On each loading of a sound file an automatic Gain Normalization is applied. So you never have to worry about using low level recordings for granulation:

Image
crusher-X 9 comes with Gain Normalization on sound files

crusher-X 9 now comes in a VST3 64bit flavor - that allows easy Sidechain support and parameter grouping (that is might be useful as we're talking about more than 370 parameters crusher-X exports on your automation playground):

crusher-X 9 adds a VST3 plug-in format that enables parameter categorization

Surround productions with granular synthesis? It's the best time now to explore the Atmos bed 7.2.1 surround channel layout with crusher-X:

What else? There is so much more in the new version of crusher-X 9 to explore that makes a granular production valuable with more fun: UI improvements everywhere, "handover" buttons to push a modulation to the GMMs, fast sound file selection, categories for the patches, mp3 audio file support, and ... and ... and. Find the full list here

Oh - wait - one more thing (expect an unreal performance boost):

Congrats on this monster lobster release!! :phones:

Can you set the start point of the GCO sample separately from the sound loaded in the Granulizer now?

Post

Purchased the upgrade (upgraded from 7,5), the craziest just keeps getting wilder and better. Now to teach myself to be more subtle in how I use X-Crush and some of the other unique stuff...

The G-Life / GLT system confuses me, I'm not clear on how it works. Is there a good video or more detailed text explanation somewhere out there?

No, this is not possible yet. Probably a good candidate for an additional GCO Grain Modulation?

Hi, yes, I think this would be fantastic as an extra grain modulation.

Nice update! :tu:

Looking forward to demoing this version of the granular mothership.

a delirious update! is it possible for in standalone version to record also with 32f bit depth, which is the bit depth of the grain buffer, i believe.

and +1 for sample offset in GCO Grain Modulation... still delving in to the features, more possibilities for GCO grain manupilation lies open. but first things first.

Experiencing some weird behaviour here with the length and birth values (in standalone and both VST versions on Windows). Examples with an empty patch with a 2 to 1 ratio: I activate link and change length with the keyboard to 6000, the birth value updates to 3000 (good), but length will now also display 3000. If i click on the numbox it will show the correct 6000 value in the dialog and will correct it after entering, but then the birth is changed from 3000 to 6000 in a similar fashion, so it becomes an infinite loop. Edit: i noticed values also copy to and from the GLT & Offset tabs.

Regarding grain length; with the mouse i can drag it to 0.01, keyboard input defaults to 1, shouldn't both be 1?

Regarding micro adjustment by dragging numbox values with the mouse; this no longer works for me.

Regarding numboxes; i noticed numbox values are no longer selected upon editing. I'm not sure if this is an issue or an intentional change, but i liked it better the way it was.

Regarding diffuse: i get a pretty nasty drone sound when adding reverb via the offset slider. It starts building at a few percent and ends as a full drone at 100%. No issues when applied via modulation.

Thanks for your very valuable feedback!

Confirmed ... strange, we have to investigate and fix.

Yes, seems like a bug. We will fix.

Yes, there is room for improvement. We streamlined input boxes and it seems the old behavior was better for fine tuning. We will rework.

Confirmed, seems that diffusion algo is only enabled on modulation and not on offset. We have to fix.

Though we did intense betatest for 9, no one in the industry is safe from bugs ;-). We're currently working on an update, expect it soon.

Thanks again,

Just bought the upgrade because I couldn't get 7.5 to load on Big Sur. Is it possible to enlarge the interface? I am on a 4K iMac.

Sure, there is the GUI size option in the settings since version 8:
