Should I buy a DAW or use AI to make my music?

How would anyone know? My bandmate sent me something this morning that you'd never pick as AI generated. He fed it the lyrics to one of our songs and it came up with it's own take on it that sounds f**king great! It's like NIN does NOVAkILL. It's on his private server at the moment but I'll get it off him and put it somewhere I can link to it and you can judge for yourselves.
NOVAkILL : Asus RoG Flow Z13, Core i9, 16GB RAM, Win11 | EVO 16 | Studio One | bx_oberhausen, GR-8, JP6K, Union, Hexeract, Olga, TRK-01, SEM, BA-1, Thorn, Prestige, Spire, Legend-HZ, ANA-2, VG Iron 2 | Uno Pro, Rocket.

if you feel you are not so good to do music then halt and switch other thing you would like to do better.. why pay to you for something that IA could do Without you? music means craft, create, it is an art, entertaiment is a masive production industry for consumption, and both are diffrent in many ways, you would need talent to create a pure-art masterpiece or to build a very succesfull product, both requires effort and willness do to the work, if you are not able to do it, then give it up, but do not pretend lie yourself and the rest of the world telling them that you are a music producer by simply going on click in a bunch of buttons to trigger a bunch of programs to create artificial music that does not como from your talent and imagination, in some countries this is called fraud.

There must be a market for personalizable love making robots that can go all night and have GPS assisted G-spot tracking.

There will always be people that will try to cut corners. Hoping AI doesn't negatively impact the industry too much.

You mean a part from destroying your society as we know it and trigger the third world war?moethelawn wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2023 4:54 am There will always be people that will try to cut corners. Hoping AI doesn't negatively impact the industry too much.
Yeah, agreed, at least leave our industry untouched

I think I have a dog in this fight, I have been using AI to help me get songs together recently and it has been a fantastic tool, I still choose the chrods, choose the instruments, write the lyrics but AI generally puts down the beats and melodies, but I still only use what I like of those.
Still my songs, just no longer have to argue with other band members.

I'd be down with AI replacing pop. I don't think I would even notice.
I don't think there's any danger of it replacing everything.
I'm much more worried about the social crisis of the accelerating effect it will have on disinformation. Vocal and video deepfakes are getting really, really good. And LLM's can already crank out plausible truthy sounding utter bullshit even better than Reddit.

Nothing personal but...
For me this Image covers the generell problem of AI very well. If I look at it I think it could be made by a schizophrenic drug addict and the Picture is analyzed by some psycho Doctors in re-search for health solutions.
There are details in it, indeed but this Image makes absolutely no sense. The colors are off. No golden cut. The proportions are off, and so on... The weight of the colors is off. This picture is completely off.
Why would I think it is interesting? Because a machine has done it.
And that is the answer for the current situation. People are paying monthly subscription fees to AI company's for something that will need many years to come. I doubt that anyone in this Forum will experience great art by "Artificial Intelligence" in its lifetime without experiencing senseless "surrealism".
I have yet to hear one song that doesn't sound like 100% generic garbage made without any feeling of form, dynamics, taste in sound design and talent ( and much more ).
Please show me at least one song that you would consider is a good AI Song.
This topic is painful overrated
There are indeed very interesting aspects within machine learning.
Ask Chat GPT ( or another machine ) for a food recipe, lyrics for a Song or other lyrics, perhaps coding a plugin. Ask for inspiration. I have seen very nice AI Images by the way, very surreal but very interesting.
I have heard "specialist's" in the news, they are warning that writing will be devalued by AI.
I tell to you, those people are the most manipulative and dangerous people in existing.
They don't tell you, the so called AI is a giant crawler in the first place that will reuse any already written Text, code, you name it that will fall in its hands. Of course it will be put together by the machine. That is indeed interesting. Mixing Music or Images by AI is interesting too but that's about it. AI steals samples and reuse it, at least at the moment.
Else, this thing is stupid like 10 foot pole.
Please show me 1 interesting AI Song and 1 interesting 3D animation. Please no surreal senseless garbage.
Please don't write like, "Oh, I've seen and heard great things, done by AI" At least show it or let it be.
Use the machine learning and its help but please don't get stupid about it.
I have lost my fear for AI being so bad and senseless in many regions and you should too.
By the way. Why not really supporting and paying artists that are creating surreal and interesting art?

I think the risk for clerical work is much much higher. I see many many jobs already being replaced, like machines destroyed a lot of blue collar jobs, AI will destroy (and already does destroy) a lot of white collar jobs.
The social impact on that on the future is way way scarier than these low quality pictures...

Which is what makes it art, baby! It's not trying to be a photograph, it's an interpretation of reality, like most modern art. I love it.
The composition, the colour, the depth, the detail, it all works extremely well for me. The way the city is seamlessly introduced into the room scene as a metaphor for how the internet puts the whole world at our fingertips gives it a real sense of proper art. The overall style is somewhat unique and I really like it. In fact, I prefer this older, more "naive" style to the krap AI is spewing out today. 12-15 months ago seems to be the sweet spot for me with this stuff. Why would I think it is interesting? Because a machine has done it.
I'm not sure if you're aware of this but the Surrealist movement has been huge in art for a century or more. I'll take Dali over Picasso or Pollock every time.I doubt that anyone in this Forum will experience great art by "Artificial Intelligence" in its lifetime without experiencing senseless "surrealism".
Mate, I couldn't show you an example of a good pop song from this century. It doesn't surprise me at all that Ai music is garbage because it's very likely that it has been trained on garbage. That said, my bandmate got some surprisingly listenable stuff, in the style of Nine Inch Nails, out of one of the AI things a few months ago. Not finished songs but things you could definitely turn into finished songs easily enough. Please show me at least one song that you would consider is a good AI Song.
I dunno about the coding stuff but I've been using plain old search for those things for 25 years. There are indeed very interesting aspects within machine learning.

How is that any different to what most people do? You didn't come out of the womb ready to produce your first album. You had to be exposed to all kinds of music and learning before you could do anything and, like AI, it's all informed by your knowledge and experience which, in turn has been informed by the knowledge and experience of countless others. e.g. Where do you think A Flock of Seagulls got their weird and whacky band name from? It seems very creative unless your a Stranglers fan, in which case you immediately recognise it as a line from Toiler on the Sea. I reuse lyrics from songs I like all the time. Sometimes very obviously, as an homage to the original, but I'm sure sometimes I'm not even conscious of the fact I'm doing it.They don't tell you, the so called AI is a giant crawler in the first place that will reuse any already written Text, code, you name it that will fall in its hands.
So do many of the most successful artists of the last 30 years. That's probably how AI learned to do it.AI steals samples and reuse it, at least at the moment.
Animation is another area where AI does things weirdly and it often looks f**king amazing. Here's an AI generated song with an AI generated video clip to go with it that I found in about 10 seconds of searching on YouTube. I'm sure there are much better examples but this works well enough -Please show me 1 interesting AI Song and 1 interesting 3D animation. Please no surreal senseless garbage.
https://youtu.be/CaTqxkZTSV8?t=1072
If it doesn't take you straight there, the song starts at about 17:50. It's a Country song, which is not my thing, but it sounds no worse than any other Country song I've ever heard and, as I said, I quite like the animation style.
Why would I when I can get AI to do it for free and get better results. My bandmate has already had several paying commissions to do AI art for people and we use Midjourney at work to create style frames in a tiny fraction of the time it would take us to come up with and implement our own ideas. AI is already revolutionising my workplace and right now it's only the tip of the iceberg. IN a year or two people will re-read this thread and laugh at how uninformed it seems. Why not really supporting and paying artists that are creating surreal and interesting art?

I'm not against AI but I think it scares the shit out of too many people at the moment and that kind of promotion is not right.
I'm absolutely not impressed when I read that a random company creates thousands of thousand AI songs and get attention in the news and media.
Those songs are utterly garbage, I only need to listen to one of them to clearly hear a weak attempt from a machine.
It's much more astonishing that journalists that have no clue about music are writing about the future of music.
Style frames and many Utilitys are a good place for AI and is helping a lot but the AI discussion is most of the time mixed up in this regard.
Watch out to whom you will give the power. A small company that has no clue about music but is producing thousands of AI songs on a daily basis, that is the business that you will spend the money to?
Otherwise, if somebody do it this way, go ahead, it's not my business.
AI is good for small utility's but can't handle the big stuff. Of course there are artists that are doing Art much better, even with the help of AI.
Btw. Midjourney is not free and the free version is a joke.
2: I once tried to participate via Discord but that's an awkward process that cost's you money at the end ( LoL )
