Synthesis: Exceptionally powerful audio-engine

Icarus is the most powerful synthesizer on the market. The award-winning audio engine offers a huge sonic range, true high-end sound quality, and the ability to create sounds that are impossible with other synths. The exceptionally versatile audio engine is capable of creating all important synthesizer sounds in high-end quality. Icarus is capable of 54 (!) different synthesis methods, which can be combined:
  • 3D wavetables & classic wavetables (known from the Waldorf Microwave)
  • Analog & subtractive synthesis
  • FM with up to 6 operators
  • Hypersaw / Supersaw (known from the Access Virus and JP8000)
  • Classic sample playback
  • Additive synthesis (known from the Kawai K1)
  • Phase-Distortion (known from the Casio CZ)
  • Formant-Synthesis (known from the Yamaha FS1R)
  • PWM (unlike conventional synths Icarus can do PWM with any Waveform, not just Squarewaves)
  • Resynthesis of samples and waveforms
  • Vocoder
  • Waveshaping (known from the Korg 01/W)
  • Ring-Modulation & Amplitude-Modulation
  • Oscillator sync
  • Resonance (exclusive to Tone2 synths)
  • Noise & Lofi
  • Physical-modeling
  • Many other innovative synthesis-modes, exclusive to Icarus
True high-end sound quality with low CPU usage

The sound quality of the Icarus easily surpasses that of conventional synthesizers. However, no high-end computer is required to operate it. The algorithms of this synthesizer were developed and optimized by an experienced DSP expert. As a result, Icarus offers the best possible sound quality with a low CPU load.

Filters

Icarus comes with the most powerful filter section on the market. Our flagship synthesizer offers 67 fascinating filter types. It's a best-of selection of over 300 filter algorithms developed by Dipl. Inf. Univ. M. Krause during the last 15 years. Many filter types are exclusive and not available from other companies, resulting in a wide range of unique sounds that cannot be produced by other synthesizers. All filters are musically useful and have very different sonic characteristics.
Two modular filter blocks are available. Each features true stereo architecture, flexible routing, and multi-mode filters. Two stereo distortion sections, each with 14 different modes, allow you to further shape the sound.
An animated display shows the frequency response and gives you instant visual feedback. This makes it very easy to tweak sounds.

Oscillators

The oscillators have many different operating modes:

Classic wavetables, sample playback, FM, additive, PWM with any waveform, hypersaw, looped waveforms, phase distortion, formant, waveshaping, ring modulation, amplitude modulation, oscillator sync, resonance, noise, lofi, 3D Wavetables, and many other modes exclusive to Icarus. All synthesis modes can be combined.

True stereo architecture

Icarus features three blocks of oscillators in true stereo architecture. This is one of the secrets why Icarus sounds wider and fatter than competing synthesizers.

Import custom samples, waveforms or wavetables

You can import and export your own samples, waveforms and wavetables with ease. The custom content is automatically embedded into your songs and patches. You will no longer have to deal with songs or patches that are broken because a file is missing from your hard drive.

Hypersaws

Each oscillator block can contain up to 10 detuned oscillators. We've taken the popular Hypersaw concept and added stereo processing, precise phase control and the ability to make individual oscillators play chords. 37 different modes are available which can be combined with any type of synthesis method.

3D Wavetables

The award-winning 3D Wavetable Synthesis creates sounds that are impossible with other synthesizers and opens up a new level of dynamic expression. Classic wavetable synthesis only allows you to cross-fade waveforms. We have extended it with an extra 'morph dimension'. You can use 54 morph modes to further shape and modulate the sound. The morph modes are not limited to traditional waveshaping methods. We have also included a wide range of innovative and exclusive synthesis methods that are not available from other companies. This results in a wide range of unique sounds that cannot be produced by other synthesizers. Take your musical dynamics and expressiveness to the next level with the power of 3D wavetable synthesis!

Wavetable editor

Icarus is equipped with the most powerful wavetable editor available on the market. It includes over 100 professional tools for creating and tweaking wavetables or waveforms. You get basic functions such as cutting, mixing, and filtering, as well as advanced tools such as noise reduction, enhancement, re-synthesis, vocoder, spectral modification, and phase manipulation. A random generator allows you to create new and musically useful wavetables with a single mouse click. The spectrum editor turns Icarus into an additive synthesizer. You can also draw your own waveforms with the mouse. The open WAV file format makes it easy for sound designers to create their own soundsets, waveforms and wavetables. It is even possible to import and export wavetables or waveforms from and to other synthesizers. In Icarus, all wavetables are automatically saved within your patches and songs, so you don't have to worry about managing additional files on your hard drive.

Resynthesis

Icarus comes with the most powerful and advanced re-synthesis engine on the market. Unlike competing products, it always delivers good results. With Icarus, anyone can create amazing sounds quickly and easily. Traditional resynthesis methods require in-depth knowledge of sample editing to achieve good results. It requires time-consuming pre-processing with a sample editor and precisely tuned samples. We have eliminated all of these hassles and developed completely new algorithms. Icarus' innovative wavetable resynthesis can rebuild sounds with a single mouse click! It works with almost any type of audio material and produces high-quality results. Just click the 'Re-synthesize' button, select a wav file, and Icarus will automatically create a patch that sounds like the original. Optionally, you can further shape your sound with morphing, BPM synchronization, time-stretching, filters, effects, or any other module. Traditional sample import, auto-tuning, beat-slicing, pitch-shifting, noise reduction and granular playback is also supported. All waveforms, wavetables and samples are automatically saved within your patches or songs. So you don't have to worry about missing files on your hard drive or broken song projects.

Vocoder

Effects

Icarus comes with a sophisticated and flexible effects section. 56 different effects, feedback and a limiter can be combined in multiple modular slots. This allows you to create new and exciting results, which can also be saved and loaded separately.
The innovative Ducking module can make the mix sound more transparent and lush. It dynamically adjusts the volume of the effect mix and prevents delays from clashing with the original signal.
An equalizer with a dynamic bass control and psychoacoustic processing gives your mix an extra boost. A real-time frequency response display makes it easy to tweak the EQ.

Modulation

Add exciting movement to your tracks! Want to use the LFO to wobble your sound? Just drag-and-drop it onto a knob. That's it! It is possible to modulate almost any parameter at audio speed. Via the matrix, different modulation sources can be precisely linked to any sound parameter: LFOs, multistage envelopes, punchy envelopes, step sequencers, MIDI signals, ...

Image

Multistage-envelope-generators

Two MSEGs are available as additional modulation-sources. The MSEGs can be operated as LFO or envelope and allow you to create any shape you can imagine. The MSEGs offer highest precision, support frequencies up into the audio-range and have been designed with the aspect of musical usefulness. Literally anything is possible: The MSEGs can be synced to BPM, sync with the arpeggiator or run freely. Triads or dotted rhythms are also supported. You can define loop-points and start points. You can delay or fade the MSEGs. You can move, add or delete points with your mouse. You can bend lines upwards or downwards to change their shape or even create precise rectangular curves. The MSEGs can be edited completely freely or you can snap points to a grid of a select-able size. It is also possible to draw triangles, bars or ramps.

This is a temporary list of what will be new in Icarus3. Everything in the list below already has been implemented. This list is not final and still will change till release.
The sound of Icarus3 is now absolutely AWESOME as all emements not greatly blend together and the weak points have been fixed. We are conviced that it will be the new reference for synthesizers.

--------------------

The update to v3.0 is a major update. It is downward-compatible with all previous versions. All existing song projects and patches can be loaded without any further steps necessary.

New synthesis features - mixed stuff:
  • New analog-modeled lowpass-filter with self-oscillation: LP Ladder 24dB.
  • New analog-modeled lowpass-filter with screaming self-oscillation: LP MS-20 12dB.
  • The random button creates more impressive patches. It now also randomizes the LFOs, the Arp and effects.
  • Added a "Transient-shaper" to SETUP. It dynamically boosts high frequency transients to add punch and clarity
  • The arpeggiator is now able to play two-tones. To access them click on '+' and pick one of these chords: m2, M2, m3, M3, P4, d5, P5, m6, M6, m7, M7, P8
  • The arpeggiator is now able to play triads. To access them click on '+' and pick one of these chords: C, Cm, su2, su4, C5, C5x
  • A new autochord mode as been added to the arpeggiator: C7 Tetrad.
  • New modulation source: Random+- is a bipolar random sample&hold value that re-triggers on noteOn.
  • New modulation source: FlipFlop+ is an unipolar value that alternates with every keypress.
  • New modulation source: White Noise+- is a modulator with biploar white noise.
  • New modulation targets: Mseg1 Speed and Mseg2 Speed can now be modulated by any source.
  • The VST3 and AudioUnit version now also support MPE. If you want to use MPE make sure that your DAW proerly transmits on all midi channels. Some older DAWs do support MPE only with VST2.
  • It is now possible to combine monophonic oscillators with a polyphonic patch. If 'Monophonic->Root Note' the currently played chord is analyzed and the oscillator plays with the root note. This mode is usesfull for creating glitter in pads or for auto-accompaniment with a bass sound.
  • The wavetable editor has a new sweep mode "Warmth" which can softly fade the current waveform to a sine wave.
  • There are now 3 different modes available which define the treatment of identical notes that are re-triggered in SETUP:
  • Soft kill old voice: If a note that is still in release is played again, the old one will be faded-out quickly. This reduces CPU and results in a clear mix.
  • Overlap voices: This is the behaviour that is common in other synths. It can result in a phasing sound.
  • Soft-retrigger old voice: The old voice continues playing. This mode is useful for pads and analog sounds.
  • Hard kill old voice: If a note that is still in release is played again, the old one will be killed at once. This reduces CPU but can also cause clicks.
  • Clicky kill old voice: The new voice will start with a punchy sound.
  • Overlap and sync phases: This mode was used in Icarus1 and 1 as a default. It forces all oscillator to be in phase with the old voice. It can cause a swelling sound.
New synthesis features - Hypersaws and Supersaws:

Icarus3 has been extended with many new Hypersaw modes. Unlike competing synthesizers ours do not occasionally sound ugly. We developed smart algorithms that carefully tweak the phase allignment to prevent occasional 'phasing' and huge volume peaks.
We are convinced, that Icarus3 has the best sounding "hypersaws" and "supersaws" available on the market. The following new modes are available in the list-selector above the DETUNE knob:
  • "MegaSaw 6" plays 6 detuned oscillators with a special, very pleasant phase allignment. It is useful for lush pads.
  • "MegaStereo 6" plays 6 detuned oscillators with stereo spread. It is useful for lush pads.
  • "MegaStereo 12" plays 12 detuned oscillators with stereo spread.
  • "SuperSaw 5" plays 5 detuned oscillators. It is inspired by the JP8000.
  • "SuperStereo 10" plays 10 oscillators with stereo spread. It has a silky signature.
  • "SuperStereo 14" plays 14 oscillators. It is useful for lush pads and very fat sounds.
  • "Drift 1x" emulates the oscillator detuning of analog synthesizers.
  • "Drift 2x" sounds like an analog synthesizer playing with 2x unison.
  • "Drift 4x" sounds like an analog synthesizer playing with 4x unison.
  • "Drift 8x" sounds like an analog synthesizer playing with 8x unison.
  • "Drift Stereo 2x" sounds like an analog synthesizer playing with 2x unison and stereo spread.
  • "Drift Stereo 4x" sounds like an analog synthesizer playing with 4x unison and stereo spread.
  • "Drift Stereo 8x" sounds like an analog synthesizer playing with 8x unison and stereo spread.
New synthesis features - Granular:

Icarus3 has been extended with Granular synthesis. With this mode you can time-stretch or pitch-shift a sample in high quality and very few artefacts.
The WAVE knobs controls the sample position. You can modulate it with any modulation source. This allows rhythmic textures.
The following new synthesis modes are available in the list-selector above the MORPH knob:
  • "Granular classic" works well for pitch-shifting or time-streching. The MORPH knob controls the window size.
  • "Granular BPM" syncs to BPM and creates rhythmic textures. The MORPH knob controls the speed.
  • "Granular variable" allows a very tight timing with very small window sizes. The MORPH knob controls the window size.
  • "Granular freaky" shifts the frequencies in weird ways. It is useful for creating freaky voices or disharmonic textures. The MORPH knob controls the frequency.
New synthesis features - FM:

We extended the FM capabilities of Icarus3. Unlike our competitor's products the FM synthesis of Icarus does not suffer from any significant aliasing.
  • Added 2 new FM synthesis modes with integer ratios: "FM Sine 4/1","FM Sine 5/1".
  • Added 2 new FM synthesis modes with subharmonic ratios:"FM Sine 1/2", "FM Sine 1/4".
  • Added 4 new FM synthesis modes with fractional ratios for bell-style sounds: "FM Sine 3/2","FM Sine 5/2","FM Sine 3/4","FM Sine 5/4".
New synthesis features - Additive:

Icarus3 bas been extended with additive synthesis. These modes drastically extend the sonic range, especially with disharmonic and unusual sounds.
Unlike competing synthesizers our additive synthesis is not limited to sine-waves. It can handle any waveform or synthesis mode. We developed smart algorithms that carefully tweak the phase allignment to prevent the occasional volume peaks that competing synthesizers suffer from.
The DETUNE knob controls the spectral spread of the partials. The following new modes are available in the list-selector above the DETUNE knob:
  • "Add Bell 4" stacks 4 oscillators. It can morph between a bell and an organ sound.
  • "Add Bell 8" stacks 8 oscillators. It can morph between a bell and an organ sound.

FAQ:

Is the upgrade free?
The update to v3.0 is a major update. The upgrade is free for anyone who bought Icarus2 directly from tone2.com after November 2023. All others can upgrade with a big discount.

Do I need to upgrade?
No. We do not use a subscription system. Your current version will continue to work without any limitation.
The upgrade is fully optional. Noone is forced to do it. If you don't like it - simply don't buy it.

Will there be Icarus4:
No. v3.x is the final version.

Will there be other Tone2 synths in the future?
No. We will not longer develop new products. Instead, we will focus our resources enhancing the existing products.
Icarus3.0 is the last major update that we will release. After this there will only free updates for the existing products like v3.1 etc as well soundsets.

Why do you not longer develop new products?
viewtopic.php?t=601129

Will you go out of business?
No. But we already got many products that we must maintain. This keeps us busy enough. We want to focus our resources on improving the existing products.

When will Icarus3 be available?
It will be available in early 2024.

It still breaks my heart that there won't be an Icarus4. I think that and Electra are your finest moments.

One word awesome!!!!

I'm glad they finally added spread control for some unison modes and an MS-20 filter! Interesting there is no MS-20 HPF. Really looking forward to getting it.

All I want for Christmas is a random -/+ modulator.

True that there's no limits to randomness possible variations, and even methaphisical questions about [how random] random really is were made in other Icarus topics... anyhow those are burried under pages and pages of text.
Personally i like to "tweak" the randoms....

Back on topic, besides noises as Modulator, the random modulator on matrix, changing the phase of the STEP LFO between predetermined values with another source, there's also a S&H and kind of a S&G... in the LFO's .

**LFO -> random -> S&H noise digital and ramped** set speed and phase to taste..

A random +/- would be nice too, i'm not sure why it's only + but i'm nearly sure there's a reason for it that we're not aware of.

One possible tweak is this; sure.. it takes matrix slots but you can fine tune it to desire and choose the modulator; in this case: velocity [higher velocity produces higher positive random values]. Could be an MSEG, another random LFO or whatever else..:::

..adjust values to taste in the matrix..

a variation to the same concept with slightly diferent results:

Icarus needs 1 more feature. Genetic cross pollination of patches with morph amounts! PLZ add the feature, guys.

I like the sound and GUI of Nemesis; but I wonder if it's capability is a subset of Icarus 3. Based on this thread, it appears Icarus3 can do everything! For someone who has both, would I be better off with Icarus3 than Nemesis3 ? (Assuming I can only afford one).

That new UI is nice. Really like the more subtle fonts. Then fonts in v2 are a bit abrasive but the new look is classy.

I noticed mpe support is listed, does that mean it is implemented/fixed in the vst3? If so I'll upgrade for sure.

I would get Icarus, but if you love FM and ringmod, you are better off with Nemesis, which has so many cool synth algorithms. You can't do all FM ratios within Icarus wavetables, but you can modulate the oscillators.

I thought tone2's founder was unwell and had stopped so great to see he's better, and thanks for the free update! Im happy about the new unison feature, that would go well with a voice spread modulator.
