I've been enjoying using DS as a player of graciously uploaded banks at pianobook, but breaking through to creating banks of my own is not so enjoyable. I'm used to using a GUI for importing and assigning samples. Doing it with command line code is not going to happen with a gun to my head. I simply have too little of that part of my brain accessible. Every tutorial I can find for creating DS instruments waxes poetically about all the great things you can do, and then it eventually gets to the showing of a template with text and commands splattered across the page in that familiar and totally confounding and indecipherable way.

Is there any kind of GUI out there for cobbling together a DS instrument? Or a way to enter the info in a spreadsheet in columns that can be imported into DS format? Basically any way aside from coded text? Even using a template and substituting new samples is painstaking, finding where to paste the new sample names, unless there's some step I've been missing here.

Thanks for any guidance here :)

As far as I understand the recent versions of Decent Sampler come with a built-in visual editor. I've not used it myself, but you will find it under "File" > "Developer Tools" > "Preset Editor". I have no clue whether it's capable of creating full DS libraries yet, since it still seems to be in development.

With that being said: using a text editor to create sample libraries might look overwhelming at first, but I think that if you follow along one of the existing tutorials out there and are prepared to invest some (but not really a whole lot) of patience and effort, you can actually learn how to do it within a relatively short time period (a few hours, definitely not weeks or months).

And there is this web-based visual editor too:

BackInCheck, thank you very much! I just discovered the Preset Editor while burrowing further ("Developer Tools" is generally a Do Not Enter sign for me :) ) and been poking around with it. I did not know about the web editor. Great! That might be exactly what I'm looking for. Cheers!

Agreed!

You are welcome. While you are at it, here is another promising looking tool for creation of Decent Sampler instruments. I haven't tried it myself, but it looks quite comprehensive (though not a visual editor):
