I fully agree regarding the GUI. But the uniform sounds it produces are far from exciting. I haven't seen something like this in a long time. No matter how drastically you change parameters, each sound contains something identical to the previous one.
It kinda sounds like there's one preset, with some variations on it. I suppose I expect when I hear the term physical modeling that it emulates some physical instrument. Nothing like that here.

Hence my view that Plasmonic and Modeler are more flexible and therefor more conducive to what i like to do. I'm perfectly happy programming a synth, if it has enough means of control.

I just noticed atoms is now at v1.1. Anyone have any idea what's changed?

It does have a dominant tonality but using stuff like the inharmonic option can yield results similar to something like Modus, lots of clattering metal sounds. Not particularly usable though which is the direction I think they took the presets.

Also noticed that it doesn't trigger sounds over the full keyboard.

Okay, I loled 😀

I'm trialling this while exploring options - along with some other Baby Audio stuff, as I own maybe half their collection.

It's another product from them that seems almost tailor-made to me and the music I make, some of their older products can be made to sound bad in a lo-fi way that's actually usable, and I make use of that a lot. Since maybe Spaced Out, there has been an improvement in the overall quality of their products imo.

Could be wrong with the timeline, idk, but Spaced Out is where things change from a "bad in a good way" ie "excellent for lo-fi" to just being great all-round, besides Comeback Kid which is mostly great but the tape saturation sounds terrible when pushed (but you can use it on a send, low in the mix, and it can sound great.. again, "bad in a good way").

Atoms is fantastic imo - I find it inspires ideas really quickly, it's the kind of synth that you might not be able to write into a pre-existing song, but you will be able to write a song around/with it.

It's excellent for unusual/off-kilter pads and plucks - I write a lot of synthwave, sure they have BA-1 for more traditional sounds in that area, but Atoms is super cool for doing that but different. It's great for darker vibes too, but can be used for bright plucks and whatnot. They don't sound like something modelling an old synth and imo that's great, it's genuinely a new flavour of sounds for me.

I'll be picking it up when I can. Same with some other products from them that I'm trialling. I actually like all of their lineup, the whole lot is a great fit for me and the music I make.

Already own Comeback Kid, BA-1, TAIP, Parallel Aggressor and IHNY.

Spaced Out, Crystalline, Super VHS, Transit and Atoms are all definitely plugins I've tried, tested, like and want to own licences to.

I can understand a lot of the criticism for Atoms - I think it's the kind of synth that's not for everyone, but if it is for you, then you'll know it and love it, and it sounds so good with some reverb, delay and a little saturation/overdrive or whatnot - it's already got a nice lo-fi vibe to it, if you want it to (it's not bound to lo-fi vibes though, can get pristine/clear sounds from it pretty easily!).. but running it through XLN's RC-20 or BA's Super VHS is great.

I've got some cool af sounds going with those + sidechained compression (well I use Kickstart 2 but yeah).

I can't use some BA products I don't own for too long because the silences are annoying as heck, but I can work around using just 1 at a time as I chip away at sales, until a bundle sale turns up, which is what I've been doing. For whatever reason, Atoms doesn't cut out for me. I think I know why and might reach out to their customer service to let them know, I'll test it some more and make sure it's really never silencing my Atoms audio. Zero piracy btw.

Anyway, it's one of those refreshing plugins to me - not an emulation of something super old, it's offers something different to what I already own and that's great for me. Can't wait to pick it up along with the others as I'm able to.

To me, Atoms isn't good at a wide range of sounds, but where it's good it excels.
A well-behaved signature.
