Surge, is a an open source synth, and a friendly, open community, as it describes itself, which is awesome. It features "many synthesis techniques, a great selection of filters, a flexible modulation engine, a smorgasbord of effects, and modern features like MPE and microtuning." If there's a successor to Synth1, it's probably surge. Simple to use, robust, beautiful, yet powerful.
