Is Windows 2000 support in a plugin still useful?

With the discussion of some companies encouraging people to move to more recent operating systems, let's do a quick poll on whether anyone thinks Windows 2000 is still necessary, or if it's safe to start using APIs that require XP or later (which effectively makes it a requirement).

MS-DOS is not an operating system by various modern definitions.

That said, I still had a working MS-DOS 6.22 installation (running on 800MHz or something processor without any problems) a few years ago, but the hardware support is getting a bit lacking.

Anyway, this poll is not a joke: so far I have been avoiding every API that requires XP, so unless I've broken something lately, my plugins should run on Win2k. But it's getting a bit tempting to move forward... hence wondering what percentage of people still run W2k (it's only 10 years old after all).

Well, I personally don't consider it essential for an audio plug-in.

I don’t see why a poll is necessary. If anyone should know what is best wouldn’t it be the person using Windows 2000?

If all your plug-ins performs on Windows 2000 why bother with XP now when it is no longer Windows most up to date operating system?

The plug-ins I use will work on Windows 98 despite the developers stating Windows XP as the minimum requirements. Some of my DAWs range from Windows 98 to Windows XP.

If you are computer literate, you will install the necessary dlls when you are prompt a plug-in cannot start because a particular file is missing which is common with Windows 2000.

If you are the average computer user upgrade to Windows XP however, bear in mind it is not Windows primary focus on operating systems anymore. Possibly I see things differently for none of my primary DAWs are connected to the Internet.
