LF-Max

The main function of LF-Max is to add sub low-frequency content to the program material and to the individual mix tracks. Beside this it features a distortion module like that found in Voxengo's LF-Punch plug-in. Signal flow is different from LF-Punch, though; LF-Punch processes low-frequency band "in-place" while LF-Max mixes distorted signal result with the original low-frequency signal.

Internally, LF-Max produces three signals: the first one is the original low-frequency signal which is extracted by means of an adjustable crossover filter; the second one is the distorted signal which is generated by applying distortion to the original low-frequency signal; and the third signal is the sub-frequency signal which is synthesized from the original low-frequency signal. These signals can then be mixed together in the desired proportion.

LF-Max also reproduces finite word-length effects on all processing stages of the plug-in (but without any kind of clipping occurring). Theoretically, the plug-in should have the flavor of outboard 24-bit DSP processors which is usually subjectively considered by audio engineering professionals as "better sounding".

Voxengo LF-Max features:

  • Sub frequency generator.
  • Distortion module.
  • Two distortion modes.
  • Distortion, sub and original signal blending.
  • FX monitoring switch.
  • "A-to-B" comparisons.
  • Mono-to-Stereo, Stereo-to-Stereo processing.
  • All sample rates supported.
  • 24-bit DSP chip imitation.
  • Native assembler DSP code.

This is my first review, prompted by a desire to highlight an extremely good product.

LF-Max is, simply put, a Sub-Harmonic Synthesizer, it samples the Bass content and adds NEW Bass (not boosted Bass) one octave lower than the existing Bass.
There are options to add either Distorted or Sub-Harmonic Bass, and they can be used together or alone. There is an option to monitor the combined output, or any of the additional Bass products singularly.

User Interface: Simple and functional - just perfect.

Documentation: I have not required any documentation, but for this review, I checked the contents and can say that it is enough for what is required.

Presets: I took away a point for presets, simply because a few of them are over the top.

Value For Money: If you required this type of effect, it would be still worth it at twice the price!

This would have to be the closest thing to the genuine dbx unit I owned several years ago, but in VST format.

If used sparingly, and in the right way, it can really contribute to a mix, but Sadly, in the wrong hands, it could also turn a nice Bass-Line into a distorted Sub-Woofer buster.

Used as intended, LF-Max is a real keeper.
