The first review for this excellent programm here on KVR-VST ? Hardly believable, since Massiva is a very good sequencer with an extremly engaged developer which deserves more attention – so let´s begin with a small description: Despite being small enough to find place on a floppy-disk, Massiva is a full-grown sequencer with comprehensive midi functions, excellent VST and VSTi/Softsynth – Support with control of every parameter, possibilties of using wav- Audioclips and a very good Soundblaster – Support. Like many other sequencers, Massiva is centered around its mixer but instead of a clumsy would-be "virtual mixing console" the mixer of Massiva is a small, nice-looking greyish thingy which grows simply by adding (audio/midi/softsynth..) channels and is easily accesible from every part of the program via a function key. The main focus of massiva is clearly still on midi and VSTi- Softsynth use; while there is good support for wav files like two ways of playing them back (from disk or - with more options – from ram) or a clever browser which allows pre-listening the files there aren´t great recording options yet. While the audio-clip editor is still fairly basic, the midi / softsynth editor is very comprehensive with event list, note-view, easy access for every midi controller, step recording and quite a few options like saving note- sequences internally or generating note or controller sequences automatically. Songs can be divided into several fast-accesible parts, also songs or songparts of can be confortably exported to wav files for freeing processor usage or final rendering.
The great thing about Massiva is an extremly fast and intuitive workflow; this starts with a loading time about one fifth of the big sequencers like Cubase/Sonar, goes on with the easy accesibility of every parameter which allows confortable editing and doesn´t end with the extremly fast and clever designed mixer – massiva is clearly designed by someone who thinks in terms of efficiency and pragmatism instead of impressing with glitter – short: it´s designed for work. Stability ? – As any other sequencer – that means: not absolutely stable unfortunatly; the difference here is the faster reloading time. Support – Very very good, Jorgen is here often or in his own forum at webmassiva.com and updates his programms very often. GUI ? – Apart from the nice-looking mixers, the optics aren´t the strongest point of Massiva, but the handling is very good. Value for money ? – Massiva is extremly cheap, and not only that you get the sequencer + a year of free updates for the money, you also get energy pro – a good virtual arpegiator VA, a good sample/Sf2 player (Cyber pro) and the modular VST-Environment energy XT with the license ! I would recommend massiva as a main sequencer for someone who uses midi and softsynths mainly and all others as a loop generator, laptop sequencer or notepad, but clearly NOT for recording acustic stuff mainly or as a beginners sequencer. |
