Plectrum

Plectrum is a 7.5 Gb virtual instrument library featuring 185 original acoustic instruments, powered by Tascam's GVI streaming sample playback engine. Plectrum is the brainchild of Geoffrey Gee, pianist, composer, and former Senior Soundware Engineer at Kurzweil Music Systems.

Much more than a tool or content library, Plectrum is a creative work of instrument design. Gee created his instruments from sounds made by plucking, strumming, tapping, scraping, and flicking a range of stringed instruments and found objects. Collecting thousands of full length high resolution samples, he voiced and tuned the sounds into full-range, expressive keyboard instruments. Plectrum's interface presents these instruments in nine categories based on these sound sources:

  1. Strummed Strings
  2. Struck Strings
  3. Plucked Strings
  4. String Harmonics
  5. Glass
  6. Ceramics
  7. Metals
  8. Found Objects
  9. Habitats.

Each instrument features a round robin playback that enhances the organic feel and texture of an acoustic instrument. The instruments in Habitats use this feature to offer ever-evolving sound environments with names such as August Morning, Afternoon Rain, Forest Stream, and Crickets.

Product: American Zither
Developer: Wavelore Instruments
Type: Zither
Price: $59.95 - $79.95
OS&Formats: WindowsVST
American Zither is powered by Tascam's GVI (Giga Virtual Instrument). A Zither is a stringed instrument having usually 30 to 40 strings over a shallow horizontal soundboard and played with pick and fingers. However, the American Zither library were performed not with pick or fingers, but with wooden mallets. Zithers come from many different cultures. They represent such a fundamental concept in string instrument design that it is not uncommon for many types to come from one area. Numbers of strings can vary widely, various sizes and shapes exist (add some frets and you've got a guitar, for ex... [more]

Product: CVPiano (Continuous Velocity Piano)
Developer: Tascam
Type: Piano / Keys
Price: Free
OS&Formats: WindowsMac OS XUniversal BinaryVST
Continuous Velocity Piano is based on spectral morphing. Eliminating the need for many bulky, discrete sample layers, spectral morphing technology produces continuous, spectral variation by processing only a single baseline sample velocity. Using the baseline as a starting point, the spectral morphing filters then dynamically interpolate frequency characteristics, which can then be continuously morphed during and after musical notes are played. The result is far greater musicality with over ten times the amount of dynamic expression. Another benefit is that instruments are much smaller in memo... [more]

Malmsjo GVI is an enhanced version of Art Vista's sampled Malmsjo Grand Piano.
