There are two parts to Automap Universal: Mixer Automap and Plug-in Automap. Plug-in Automap works in all sequencers with any plug-ins. Mixer Automap (which also incorporates some plug-in and session control) only works with supported sequencers.

Plug-in Automap

Plug-in Automap within Automap Universal works by wrapping plug-ins to add Automap functionality. Opening up a wrapped plug-in allows direct communication with the hardware controller, causing plug-in parameters to be instantly mapped to the hardware controls. This means that Plug-in Automap works in virtually any sequencer, not just those that support Mixer Automap. Furthermore, every plug-in is given a Learn mode for you to create your own layout; simply move a control within the plug-in window and then one on the SL to map a parameter.

Each Automap-wrapped plug-in is identical to the original plug-in, with the exception of a small border that features an Automap logo. This border allows you to show or change what plug-in is being Automapped, activate Learn/Clear modes, change control names (displayed on the SL screens) and type in control ranges and step values for encoders and buttons.

The plug-ins function as expected and behave normally within the sequencer, only now the SL can talk directly to the plug-in without having to route through the host software. With multiple wrapped plug-ins in a session, the active Automap logo indicates the plug-in that the SL is currently controlling. Different plug-ins can be selected for control within the software or from the SL itself.

Mixer Automap

Automap Universal features the same comprehensive mixer support as the original Automap. This works from a different Template onboard the SL (Template varies from sequencer to sequencer), which will load automatically when the sequencer does. To switch to Automap Universal's new plug-in control from Mixer Automap mode, the Plug-in Automap Template (Template 38) must be manually selected on the SL.

Mixer Automap works differently in each sequencer, with all Automapping the whole Mixer but the other session parameters such as navigation, as well as internal and external plug-ins and effects, varying in size and implementation. Mixer Automap does incorporate some plug-in control as this was originally intended to cater for all needs, but this isn't exactly the way we want it to be, which is why the new Plug-in Automap system was brought about. However, the plug-in control within Mixer Automap does have some uses that Plug-in Automap doesn't include, such as controlling internal instruments within some sequencers.
