Pitch Shifter is a plug-in to shift the pitch of an incoming audio signal. By mixing the pitch shifted signal with the original signal via the dry/wet control, basic detuning, octaving and harmonizing effects are also possible. This shifter is based on a delay-line with two cross-faded read pointers. Such an architecture allows for feedback - and feedback gives the potential for rather drastic, weird special effects like monster-voices, flanger-like effects and more.

To keep it from eating up CPU, mute it's input using automation. This prevents it from attempting to process the sound of "nothing".

In fact, lots of effect plugins have trouble processing the sound of "nothing", so if you ever have a VST effect that chews up CPU when not in use, try the method mentioned earlier.
