Switch to straight sliders with direct text input.subterfuge wrote:Well, for me dragging them with upside down U movement works really good and fast. But the straight up/down drag like you mentioned earlier works only for the half of the range and sideways drag tends to be jumpy and the min/max values still have to be accessed with a curve. Maybe that could be adjusted a bit?

This is really good! Any chance of adding microtuning support? Would be so cool for gamelan sounds, and various experimental things.
If not I might have a look at the source myself and see if I can hack something together. Started working on Juce a while back then set it aside - this could be the excuse I need to pick it up again.

Great sounds to be found here, where is the harp / pluck patch that we used on the title track on our album "Afternoons in Utopia" ? it was patch #28 on our DX-7, nowhere to be found in the patches I have downloaded. Toy piano (ROM1B Patch #8) is just as I remember it. I know for fact we didn't edit any soundsras.s wrote:

A DX1 emulator would certainly be very fun to play with (with the original UI layout), but if I remember right, it is two DX7 stacked together; so sonically it wouldn't be that ground breaking.
For the knobs, I already know about this; the rotation, it's the default one in JUCE. This will get addressed when the official UI will come in. Let me just see if I could use a "mouse over" so it would tell the parameter name/value without having to change it.
Yes, the 'user' patch manager is already planned (I've made a C++ class just for that). I would see it as a single .zip (in Document Settings and stuff) that contains all the sysex you want to be available. A directory in the .zip cause a submenu in the "CART" button.
The "Middle C" (transpose function) is ignored indeed. I forgot that. It will be fixed in 0.5.2.
Sorry if don't answer on time, I'm a newly father and time is pretty much 'variable' for me right now.
Long live to the DX7 !

From what I understand (having never seen a DX1 in the flesh), it is pretty much two DX7's sonically with a better D/A section. I think (I could easily be wrong here) the main thing was the performance possibilities (polyphonic aftertouch, proper piano action keyboard, realtime adjustment between the two voices) and, of course, the editing, having a MUCH better array of controls and displays.asb2m10 wrote:A DX1 emulator would certainly be very fun to play with (with the original UI layout), but if I remember right, it is two DX7 stacked together; so sonically it wouldn't be that ground breaking.
It was those things (minus the poly aftertouch and keyboard action) that I was thinking of when I was seeing a bigger version of Dexed covering the DX1.

A big thank you to asb2m10 for this very usable and great sounding, free DX7 VSTi.
Thanks also to ras.s for the extra patches.
I'm not really a big synth VSTi user, but what with this little gem and Obxd, I have got most of the synth sounds I need (I'm kind of old school when it comes to music)
Cool bananas.

For those who haven't seen these, here's a couple of interesting SoS articles on Yamaha and FM synthesis. Certainly an interesting read.....

The first result of this research will teach you absolutely everything on the FM synthesis:

Why? Because it is this... hem... document which is at the origin of the legendary FM synthesis.
And in fact, it is the reference.

I have to say FM synthesis blew my tiny mind back in the day (as did Casio's PD Synthesis) my first dip into FM was with a DX7mkII FD with the grey matter expansion fitted. But with Dexed and it's ability to load up sysex from original DX sounds, I can dig deeper into the world of FM either just using the available Dave Benson DX patches or the ones supplied, or I can read up with the links provided and actually learn to understand / program my own sounds.
Thanks AusDisciple and BlackWinny for the links here

Another good read about FM synthesis is the chapter in How to make a noise: http://noisesculpture.com/how-to-make-a-noise (free .pdf book -- though it uses different synthesizers as the examples)
And hey folks, thanks for the thank yous, but I don't really deserve it, I just got maadd Google skillz. ;) The developer is the one who deserves our gratitude, and the developer whose works he is basing this synth on.. And there's a fine selection of patches included in the synth itself, plenty of stuff to trawl through..

Congrats from here too on becoming a father asb2m10. Don't worry about time spent here, that time is much more precious right where you are with your family right now.
Glad to hear you have further development ideas and fixes going, it will be interesting to see how Dexed gets improved.
While I've been on mission to get my FM programming chops a bit above the preset playing ability, I still wonder if anybody has syx files for the DX7II Bank B patches? The earlier mentioned sysex.tar file (amongst many others) has the original DX7 banks and at least DX Manager (http://www.fm-alive.com) comes with the DX7IIFD bank A which can be converted to DX7...Dexed. But apart from single bank B patches here and there, only whole banks in formats which apparently don't quite convert to the original DX7 format seem to be commonly available.

Dexed looks good but crashes my host of choice, Tracktion 5 unfortunately. Tried 0.5 and 0.51 (Windows 32 bit VST). Works OK in energyXT though.
