!FRANKENMIX!
Music from the GRAVE

(thanks to Landphil for the graphic!)

Time to hit the laboratory, chums! For this month's experiment in mad science, we shall be digging up OLD DEAD CONTEST ENTRIES and creating NEW TERRIFYING CREATURES from their individual parts.

Then they will do battle for only ONE MINUTE: should be long enough to sow the seeds of terror, yes?

Any past contest entry is elligible for being cannibalized for parts. Don't have your own collection to dig through? Well then, you can visit the GRAVEYARD to go browsing for pieces that might inspire you.

And to that end, how about some collaborative spirit? If you want to use specific, isolated sounds or tracks from someone's entry, just ask them! I think we can manage to share an audio clip here, a MIDI file there. But if you share with someone, how about making it fair and dumping it in the GRAVEYARD as well so that everyone has a fair crack at the remains?

But try to have some professional pride about this, okay? Using parts of your *own* past creations is playing it safe, and how will you gain the respect of your colleagues by such timid gestures? You can still do it if you need to (lack of time, etc), but you *know* we'll talk about you behind your back around the watercooler...

We want the best of a new breed of monsters! To my mind, I think using parts from more past songs the better. And if you could even cite your sources when posting your creation, even finer.

But keep in mind the spirit of the season, though. We want your masterpiece to be spooky, creepy, ominous, scary, violent, or terrifying! No happy little dance-floor filling mashup numbers, okay? Save that stuff for next year's "Easter Buffy Fluffy Lovefest": for now it's time to GET EVIL!

RULES

1 - your track MUST be ...

(a) encoded in either .ogg format (quality level 4.00 or lower) or .mp3 (128kbps or lower if fixed rate ... average of 128kbps or lower if VBR)
(b) You have a time limit of ONE MINUTE for your monster to wreak havoc. That's right: just 60 seconds.
(c) named in the format yearmonth_artistname___tracktitle (ie - 0509___artistname_tracktitle.mp3) with AT LEAST the artist and title fields of the ID tag completed (untagged entries will be disqualified)
(d) composed using exclusively (preferably!) audio and midi data from past competition entries created by others
(e) entered into the contest by posting a DIRECT link in this RULES & SUBMISSIONS thread (use the GOSSIP thread for everything else)
(f) to help us out, please also cite your sources in your submissions post
(g) submitted before 11:59 PM monday 31st october

2 - your track SHOULD also be ...

(a) composed specifically for this contest
(b) remix or hybrid material in any Halloween vein (spooky, ominous, creepy, scary, terrifying, etc) with as little (to none) original material as possible

3 - only one entry per person - no resubmissions without permission from the moderator

4 - any tracks not adhering to these guidelines will be very naughty indeed

5 - voting (members must have at least 20 posts to vote ... although contest entrants are exempt from this ruling) will run from the submission deadline until 11:59 PM monday 7th november- anyone voting for themselves will find ALL their votes disqualified - any entrants not voting will also be disqualified

Violating the letter but feeling like I caught the spirit, here's all of UTM's great cover art processed through BeepMap, plus some drum sounds.

This started rather randomly; I picked three entries from previous october contests (pHz-biosphere; Bonteburg-Scary Bonte; Markleford-Zombioni) and put the audio's in Cubase. I took an 8beat loop from which I started processing and rebuilding.

FX used: Compadre Beatpuncher () on all separate tracks and master; betabugs Moneo; arcDev Ghidrah; OhmyGod; Quadfrohmage; Zrev and Alesis Quadraverb. Mastered with Compadre; FilterscapeQ6 and Steinberg Stereoexpander.

Making for this:

To narrow things down, I decided to fiddle with the putrescent corpses instead of the fresh ones. (My rule of thumb was that I'd only use songs by people who hadn't entered a competition in the last year or so, but I was too lazy to check this out rigorously.) Anyway, to all those who've passed through the kvr contest at some stage, thanks for the music. :)

I don't think these are my legs, it's very hard to walk, and eventually I'm going to have to sit down and think about what it all means...

Slapped together with a bit of spit and baling twine from the following corpses:

Matt Tyas - Fast Rain (April 2002)
Dewf - Beginning of the End (April 2002)
Reg Phoenix - Bicycle (April 2002)
Fitch - Check It (June 2002)
Kajiki - Ana (Sep 2002)
Steve Newton - Steam Powered Robot (Sep 2002)
Freejazzguy - Rainbow (Sep 2002)
Bluedad - Melody (Oct 2002)
Universal Constructors - Just a Little Water (Dec 2002)
Resonance - Fragile Like Us (April 2003)
SuperChu-Hi - Quiet (April 2003)
Captain Mark - Bombay Palace (Nov 2003)

Phatmatik Pro was my trusty Igor this month.

I didn't think I was going to enter this time because I've never done any grave robbing before and necrophilia is dead boring, but...

I had a go and came up with this.

Death March

IXOX - Evil Walk 06_04
FSP - One of Them 04-10
ROZZER - Don't Make so much noise 10-03
BARNADINE - Lamb 10-03
Patrick9 - Meditation 10-04

Chopped in Wavelab, assembled in Tracktion2
processed with CamelSpace,Baxxpander, SIR, FinalMix.

FRANKINNONSENSE

-------------------------------------------
tampered,cut, stitched and tucked from:

(i) "Forgot" by Rusted Monkey, september 04

this provided the rhythm guitar loop, and assorted time stretched noises, a further fragment was taken and used as the stem cell to rear an organ in paaxpro2.

(ii) "sweet Summer Rain" by AndreasE, august 04

supplied the choir sounds, extracted through filtration processes.

(iii) "Sax Dub Solo" by Markleford, from the Graveyard post

this provided a miniscule waveform from which the violin like sound was fashioned in paaxpro2.

(iv) "I Feel Better Now" by Col.G, august 04

a vocal snippet, so that he may speak, as he goes forth into the world.

-------------------------------------------

cobbled together in the eXT laboratory, with the aid of paaxpro2, kjaerhus classics, psp nitro, ixox delay and glaceverb.

Oh what fun....It inspired me to have a go for the first time.

Here is my contender for the monster's ball...Frankenbarney must die

The Power of Darkness

I cannot escape this hurt and anger
tearing
splattering
My whole existence is a lie
I'm the darkness that rules your life
the blade kisses me deeply
utterly unloved, my only companion is the darkness
The fallen, the outcast, the dark angels
helpless
my soul is like poison
one day i too will take life
endless hopelessness
This is the curse of Frankenbarney

Cries And Whispers

Markleford's sax takes the lead here in what feels rather like the exhausted, slow-motion end of a Bladerunner nighttime chase scene through the dark crowded streets in the pouring rain. I knew the sax solo samples would be popular but I couldn't help using them. They really help guide this piece to its conclusion and keep the orchestral samples from dominating.

I borrowed the song title from Bergman. My wife once rented a copy of his movie on DVD and I completely failed to watch it :D But I think the title fits the song rather well.

In all I think I used over 50 unique audio clips, including the ones I used in Absynth and Vokator. However, there are actually 104 instances of audio used overall, some of them being used more than once, obviously.

Audio clips taken from:
