If this is true, I'm already moist around the gussetshamann wrote:So this is making the blog rounds today. Seems Arturia's next one will be a Prophet 5 and VS combo.
Be interesting to see how well they merge the two synths into one.

Lets hope it comes closer to the real thing than NI's offering.

Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

With the VS implementation included, I'm betting it's not going to come close to either the VS or the P-5- they were two entirely different beasts, and keeping the integrity of the emulation of either in such a hybrid is going to be VERY tough. That fact doesn't stop it from being a very interesting synthDanny Darko wrote:![]()

This is stupid.
Prophet 5 is a famous name that was big news in its day. But it was a dime a dozen polysynth only a few years later. A VA of it with pretty graphics? Who cares? You might as well stick with Minimogue VA.
Now if they'd gone after something with really unique sounding filters like the EMS Synthi 1000.... But no. They had to go for a "dog-whistle" brand name.
Marketing. Boring. Pointless.
Assuming, of course, that it's actually true.

BUT, that combined with the vector synthesis of the VS (especially if they let you load your own waves) makes for a very cool synth. The one thing I never like about a real VS was the 12 bit waves (you could import samples via SDS, but they'd be converted to 12 bit).Hitchcock Bell wrote:This is stupid.

Yeah, it's true, the ad was in this months Keyboard magazine. Looks like it might even have the option of just using the Prophet 5, Prophet VS, or the combination of them both put together. Sounds pretty cool to me... Maybe not the absolute most amazing thing ever, but another great tool. It's just another type of hammer, a mixing of two old reliable hammers that is... You might think that only today's new titanium hammer that shoots is what's really amazing, but yesterday's hammer's built the world, and surely still have their uses.Hitchcock Bell wrote:

Had you been around at the time the P5 was the best synth in town, I think your opinion would be different. I'm not saying this in an inflammatory way, but this synth was the stuff of dreams for people like me. Now, NI's Pro 52/53 was ok, but not really a true representation. If this was closer, it'd be worth a look at the very least. The P5 and it's siblings were hardware gems. The Prophet 10 Version 2 with the double manual was an awesome sight, especially if you saw Richard Barbieri tinkering with itHitchcock Bell wrote:This is stupid.

Let's give it a chance. If it's a dog, I'll be among the first to criticise.

Yes but you could get all that from a dozen other VSTIs, some of them free. I guarantee that this synth will sound like a truck-load of other VTIs. If people want to pay for cute graphics and a brand name, then fine.
Sorry, but developers are really going to have to do better than this. There are too many other fantastic synths out there that can already do all this (by one means or another). So, as far as a Prophet emu goes, you'll just end up paying for a bunch of presets.
Come on. This is 06. New creative thinking required please.

Interesting to see how the 4-oscillator vector mix pans (sorry!) out - are they using four P5 oscillators, 2 P5 and 2 VS oscillators, a free assignment, or what..?

This is all about nostalgia. If nostalgia sells, then good luck to Arturia. But really, ain't no one intersted in pushing forward into new sound textures these days? Arturia should take a leaf out of Prophet's original book and go for something really different.

I'll have to disagree there. While ASynth comes close to the vibe of a VS, the only thing that really comes close is VectorSector (and the small GUI of that makes it hard to work with). And, while the Arturia clones fail as emus IMO, they're still very good sounding synths; I have MoogModular and while it's definitely not a System 55, it's a very good sounding and flexible synth. The combination of VS and TAE emulation has lots of potentialHitchcock Bell wrote:ew

While it's true that it's possible to make
more impressive soft synths from scratch and
also true that there are more impressive hardware
that that can be emulated, the fact remains that
Sequential synths were highly regarded AND highly
recorded in their day.
I run a recording studio
and have made many clients happy providing
them with emulations of synths,(and specific
patches), they know and love. Call it marketing,
call it hype....the fact is, it works and plenty
of people want it.
If you don't like it, don't
buy it....as some of you have stated there are
better free options.....so quit your sniveling
and download them.
Why bitch? You kids have WAY more
options for WAY less money than us crusty old
leviathans ever dreamed possible.
Cheers......CL

Hm, interesting. On the ad it has a Yamaha sign at the bottom on the left. What do they have to do with it? Do they own the SC rights right now?
