as far as glitch being dead... i don't buy into genres. they are invented to explain away beauty, or t0 elevate trash. if your music glitches and it is beautiful, it will never be dead. you can't put beauty in that kind of box.

Of course, if you don't realize that Industrial is not a regular genre anymore, and is in fact an umbrella/supergenre like Rock, you might think otherwise. I'm far from anti-industrial, it use to be "my thing". But that thing has waned terribly this decade... BUT, you tell me two actually -decent- industrial albums that came out this year and I'll give them a listen.

Well to be fair my last two releases were NOT glitch, one was self-proclaimed "Synthclash", and the other one was just "Experimental", though it had fleeting moments of glitch.

I'm afraid I really don't know what glitch is then, for the same reason Runagate mentioned; I am almost completely isolated from any kind of music "scene" outside of my wanderings around the net -here primarily.

is glitch a sound sorce or a method? I like to make my structures glitch, simply considering glitch as a simple evolution to both a static beat with a bassline or a programmed-for-hours-and-intentional-to-the-bone drum track.

Me too - I never really understood what Glitch was or what defines so many of these micro-genres. It all seems to come down to including a certain kind of sound or sound source or different beat even as if you could place 2 different pieces of classical or jazz music in different genres because one has a piano in it and the other a violin and one is faster than the other? I know some of the music I like is defined by others as "Glitch", maybe even some of what I make, but I never saw it that way as I was making this stuff before the term Glitch came along and anyway I hate being pigeonholed. So "Is Glitch dead?" - was it ever really alive?

Voted 'stagnant.' Various thoughts though:

1) I agree that, glitch isn't really a genre so much as a technique these days. Originally when the only people doing it were the serious eggheaded experimentalists it kind of made sense as a genre, but when you've got stuff as wide ranging as Fennesz, the Soft Pink Truth and some of the borderline breakcore stuff, it doesn't really make sense to think of it as a unified thing.

2) Part of the reason that glitch gets a bad rep is that for a lot of people there's still novelty in the actual sounds and the sounds are still associated with the idea of experimentation, so for a lot of people a tune will sound interesting if it has dBlue Glitch whacked on the drums, even if there's no idea at all about creating an atmosphere or a feeling or conveying emotion or anything like that. Hence you get loads of glitch that isn't very interesting, so the whole sound gets a bit boring by association.

Long story short, it boils down to the fact that all electro-subgenres have an expiration date... that's how I feel. I am always looking for something new and futuristic

then don't worry about the fads. do something, learn from it, move on. I think the point has been hashed to death on this board: nothing is experimental after its been done the first time.

so glitch was new. it was futuristic. it was your experiment. at this point you decide a) its over - time to move on to your next experiment or b) f**k it - I really like this and I'm going to stick with it. but whatever you decide should be based on your own personal feelings and not the consensus of a bunch of strangers on a message board.

I mean look at the Rolling Stones. they should have given up decades ago but they enjoy what they're doing so they stick with it.

and I don't know what any of this has to do with other people's plug-ins, but if its all a ruse to get your ass kissed for being on-the-ball years ago with glitch plugs then just say so. you deserve the respect.
