poll: do you read the manual?

i apologise for a thread more or less to calm my nerves -

new sequencer has a fair amount of "new" components.. i'm putting too much energy wondering what term people are going to understand best, et c..

so, here goes..

..for newer sequencers.. eg. circuit and populus - do you try it first, read later, read first, or never read and expect the gui to be self-explanatory??

i'm using some proprietary counting circuits.. and i just don't see any way that i can make them understandable from the gui.. and oc this is my rent in question, so.. i've entirely justified worrying

if no one reads the manuals, then i will have to add stuff to the gui i'd rather omit..

Try first, if I can't figure it out or I CAN figure it out but don't UNDERSTAND what exactly i am doing, I will read the manual. but I definately always want a manual whether I will use it or not

I've read manuals and books on software I use at work. For fun-time, studying manuals is plain waste of time, I refer to these only if I can't figure something out by playing with the soft or I find a feature I'm not sure what to do with.

Often i only read a manual, because i have a problem, i can't solve without it.
In your case it's different: I try out the app first and then i read the manual, because they are an art in itself: your manuals are way beyond the usual with lots of interesting informations about the app and how it works and physics and technical background.

Generally, I don't. Except when I can't do nothing, or very few things. Your last works are unusual, and it's good, so I read the manuals. Even with the manuals, it takes some time to understand.

I don't like reading manuals, so i try first.
But sometimes, if i am stuck or think i am missing some interesting features, I'll get into the manual.
For your midi plugins, i liked to tweak it blindly until i get a wished result.
Then, only, i read it to be able to "expect" something, and not only "blindly tweak". I like both approaches.

Not only i read it first, i also convert the PDF to a special format that a software i have on my phone can display, so i can read them more when i'm on a bus .
What i would like to see in a manual, besides the obvious explanation of every button or dial, is a simple step-by-step tutorial just to get me started.
