OK, it's very dark, and eerily quiet.... something scary approaches out of the freezing mist .....
........ Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!! ... it's,... it's, ......... Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! ..... Not the 9th One-Synth-Challenge!
Mwuh huh huhuhuhuhu!! .....Yeeeesssss! .... and our chosen instrument of diabolical torture for this Halloween themed challenge is Krakli's 'Gargoyle' .
Create a track using only Gargoyle for all the sounds, including percussion!
Designed by Ian Webster, Gargoyle is one of a range of excellent and intriguing synths and effects by Krakli Software.
You can download Gargoyle, ( and many others ) here ....
http://krakli.com/krakli-free-synths/
********* RULES ( please read fully) **********
In keeping with the Halloween theme, tracks will be devoid of jollity, frivolity, or humorous quality... its the sound of the dead, the dismembered and the deplorable we want Ok? .... 'uplifting' is not for uploading! .... heebie-jeebie-scared-to-sleepy creepy is the name of the game!
Tracks can be made in any host.
All the sounds in our tracks will be created by Gargoyle.
**FX**
As there are no internal Fx in Gargoyle, we can afford to be a little more liberal with our permitted Fx. So we will allow EQ, reverb, delay, dynamics (gate/limit/compress etc ), stereo width ( and other 'mastering type' stuff which affects the mix, rather than the sounds ).
But note!!
*Fx must be freeware, and easily available via download.
*The number of Fx should be kept to the minimum required to produce your track.... it may be a Halloween comp, but "for the hell of it" is not an acceptable reason to include an effect.
*No effect should be used in such a way as to transform the sounds to a degree which makes them unrecognisable as those obtained from Gargoyle
..... otherwise you will be denounced as a witch and will suffer the usual pain and indignity of a trial you cannot win, and subsequently be publicly burned at the stake (.... or whatever other horrible means of despatch we can come up with! ... yeah, I'll show you how to overuse a warmifier to transform your voice!!! ....)
*** There is no track length limit.
**** Finished tracks, in mp3 format, should be uploaded here ...
http://www.4shared.com/dir/21373365/665 ... lenge.html
(Note ... this is not the usual OSC upload folder! Now that comps will overlap, it has become necessary to use a second folder.)
* Please post in this thread when you upload a track, that way I can prevent
abuse of this public folder. Anything uploaded without an accompanying post
here will be deleted.
For the sake of clarity, name your track in the following format ...
Title of Track - Artist Name ( in that order pleeeze! )
* Before you do that though, create a notepad/text file and describe briefly what you have used ( host, how many instances of Gargoyle, which fx, how many instances.. etc. )
....... keep it short though, that way it can be read in preview mode without the need to be downloaded.
*Save the notepad/text file as the title of your track, that way it will sit above or below the track itself when you upload it, and not get mixed up with any others. ( feel free to post or PM me if you have any problems uploading, or should you need any typos fixed etc. )
**** CLOSING DATE for submissions is 28th October! ****
VOTING.................
Normally a poll is opened as soon as is practicable after this deadline, and voting open to all kvr members for a period of 7 days.
However, there has been a bit of new thinking on this issue, and depending on the number of entries, we may adopt a more flexible system. In any case, it will still be based on the votes of KVR members.
..... NOTE ..... Only tracks uploaded to the hosting folder allocated for this comp, before the closing date, accompanied by said info text file, will appear on the poll. Please do not post seperate, external links to tracks you wish to be included in the comp.
PRIZES.......................
@@ Gargoyle creator Ian Webster is donating an updated version of Gargoyle with the winners name on the panel, also an exclusive new version .. "Gargoyle2" ... progress on this new version will be posted on krakli.com
@@ Rob_lee has generously donated a selection of soundbanks, and is considering adding to his donation ... watch this space!
Thanks to Ian for the excellent prize donation ... and thanks once again to Rob for his support of this, and of previous comps
@@ I will come up with something you will hopefully enjoy playing around with, to add to the growing participants prize bundle .... and make your participation worthwhile, ....and ... ... ...
ANY OTHER OFFERS OF PRIZES WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
I like to think though, and judging by the previous comps, that the biggest prize is the joy of participation, and the learning process.
So, nothing to lose ( other than hair, sleep and sanity ), and plenty of time!
**** Good luck with those tracks! ...... and have fun!!! **** ------------

I actually managed to get a decent lead synth out of Gargoyle yesterday. I saved it too
However, one lead synth doesn't make a a track. So far I'm really struggling with this one....we'll see if I can actually get a whole track out of this. By far the hardest osc so far! And as drums go....well if some white/pink noise scattered around the track are drums, then I can make drums too!

OK, this is so wrong it might actually be right...
First post is "Gargoyles Love Pot Noodle" which is named after an old Not The Nine O'Clock News sketch circa 1978/9.
Mel Smith (dressed as vicar in fake advert)... "Pot Noodle? My gargoyles just lap it up". A phrase I still use to this day when presented with horrific food - like pumpkin.
I'm afraid I couldn't find a Youtube link to help out our friends from around the world but hopefully you get the drift...
Thanks again to Krakli for making such unique sounding VST's. There's a place in hell for him somewhere.
Hopefully, an evil laugh.
Best of luck all,
Mouxbar

Great stuff and really appropriate for a Halloween contest!tattiemannie wrote:dnekm has mailed me to offer [...] Whispers and Enochian vocals"
Had some chatting about this samples the last year and I think it's worth to share this curiosity: these "Enochian Calls" (if I remember right) are those "written" by Aleister Crowley. The vocals in the pack by dnekm are performed by his wife which share the same name with Crowley's wife!
This serious stuff babies, take a look at the darkest corner of your room when you'll turn off the light!
They also have a shop full of interesting stuff which fit very well the Halloween mood
EDIT: where is the voting poll for OSC8?

Close.....
Except my wife's name is Leilah Wendell, not Laylah Waddell. Though they do share similar looks....
And for those who are interested:

No, Crowley worked with the Enochian calls, but they were supposedly "received" via scrying in the 16th century by John Dee and Edward Kelley.MaxSynths wrote: these "Enochian Calls" (if I remember right) are those "written" by Aleister Crowley.
Crowley was never married to Leila Waddell. (though she was his mistress and "Scarlet Woman" for a little while)MaxSynths wrote: which share the same name with Crowley's wife!
Sorry to go off topic...now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Yes I know, I have some copies of the originals here. BTW Crowlry has been the first one as far as I know to do some audio recording with the calls, and in magick tradition Crowleys performance are used as reference. It all depends on what do you mean with "married". If you mean in a christian, catholic, jew, muslim way then no, it was not married.Crowley was never married to Leila Waddell. Yes, the Calls originated with Dee. Crowley, however, added his own pronunciation, which differs quite a bit from the originals.
The pronunciation used in the Anomaly samples comes from the Dee version.
