RECEPTOR 2 Version 1.8 System Software Update -Public Beta

I was just doing some research to verify myself...I don't buy this either. I believe the motherboard number is MS-7142, and I will open up my Receptor later to double-check.

When I Google for "MS-7142", I get pages that reference the K8MM-V, with "MS-7142" as a submodel. Here is MSI's page for the K8MM-V:

Actually, my "IK Multimedia" MB is MSI-N1996. It shows up at the MSI site as KM4-AM-V. I also looked at the manual for K8MM-V and it looks similar...they both have SATA but one is socket 462 (KM4-AM-V) and the other is socket 754 (K8MM-V). It does say "REV-C" on the outside of my box, but this may have been a 1st generation REV-C or something (hence the blow out price). The Turion is socket 754, so I would go with that...

... are Socket 754 CPUs; however, given that you have a different motherboard, I wonder how many different motherboards Muse Research has used in its Receptor 1 line, and if Rick is talking about a different motherboard altogether.

I read the change log for each BIOS version, and none of the change logs reference problems with booting SATA drives.

So, how about it, Rick? Is this the motherboard you're referring to, or are we talking about a different motherboard?

The issue is we discovered the BIOS for Receptor Rev C does not reliable boot a SATA hard drive...

So ? Receptor 1 owners have a machine that has an IDE drive. Release an IDE version of OS 1.8 !!!

Secondly, if I believe the info given my Muse, the Receptor 2 standard has a 250Gb IDE drive fitted, the SATA models reserved for the Pro and Pro Max versions. This means you must have a working OS 1.8 for IDE drives.

Apart from that SATA Bios issue, is there any other reason preventing you from releasing OS 1.8 for Receptor 1 ?

Heck, I even offer my services to beta test this on a clean system.

I looked again on my IK Multimedia board and I found "K8MM3" which translates to K8MM3-V (MS-7181)...this is a socket 754 board. It is definitely stamped with "N1996" right in the middle, so maybe it is some internal production recycling of some kind.

I would imagine that I could plug in a SATA drive (and CD IDE for install), install whatever OS I like, choose SATA as the startup, and it would work. Rather than bastardize my Receptor to prove this I will leave it to Muse to explain exactly what they are referring to by stating that there are 'SATA boot issues'.

What I need to do is add value to a very expensive product that I already purchased from Muse (i.e. I am a customer). I am not going to upgrade to a Receptor 2, and I should not have to pay any upgrade fee. I also require backup discs that allow me to restore my unit to a default state in case something goes awry (and Muse is out of business). If the best you (Muse) can do is provide me with an exact image of my configuration, then at least provide that. I should not have to image my own Receptor hard drive especially when you have it glued in like you do.

Ideally, I would prefer install discs that allow me to install OS 1.8 to match my current configuration. I understand the compromise that this means for you, but it is the nature of the beast. Maybe there is a way for you to track where your install discs go by embedding a serial number of some kind in the image? How about verifying the system ID of the hardware before install (i.e. MAC address, HD serial, etc.) to short-circuit pirating? Maybe there is a way to use iLok account information?

I completely concur and would be willing to beta test this too. I don't see any reason why OS 1.8 won't work on my Pro Jr IDE drive. Give me an ISO image to install at my own peril.

There's less information about this motherboard on MSI's site. Any BIOS updates that might be available have to be downloaded via their update tool. Lame.

Googling for "K8MMV-3 sata boot problems" shows two classes of problems:

1.) Some people were having problems using their CD burners over SATA. It's not clear whether BIOS updates resolved this issue, as the complaints were made 1.5+ years ago. It is clear that the K8MMV-3 motherboard has a VIA chipset, and that had something to do with the issue. I don't know how VIA is viewed in the Windows audio world, but I know that VIA is viewed negatively in the Linux audio world due to various incompatibility issues.

2.) Some people had problems with their SATA hard drives, but the problems were solved by changing a setting or two in the BIOS.

This makes me wonder; is Muse Research having a problem with the BIOS itself, or are they trying to automate the changes in the BIOS so that poor, fragile Receptor users don't have to ever know that the BIOS exists?

That's a REALLY good idea! When the Muse host executable starts, it can scan the iLok for a license from Muse Research to use the executable.

If the iLok is good enough to verify the licenses of the VSTs that you use, then it's good enough for verifying a license to use the VST host itself.
