Can anyone confirm this correct ? the Apogee duet does not possess a MIDI connection, period. But if one has a MIDI keyboard and connects it directly to a Mac via a USB MIDI interface cable, would this act essencially the same as if the keyboard was connected to the Apogee duet itself ?
because if one can't connect a MIDI keyboard direct to the Audio interface, thay should still be able to by-pass this via the othere connection ?

yes, you can.
plug your midi in via usb and it will work no matter what sound card you're using.

Seeing Macs are music friendly i don't think i would ever have any issues concerning latency but in the rare case of it happning would the Audio interface still cover me even though my MIDI device is connected directly to the Mac ?
