i have realized (finally), that i have no musical talent whatsoever.
this is after years of playing the cello, electric bass, electric guitar, acoustik guitar, and of course sequencing synthesizers and samples in abelton live.
i can come up with a neat little melody once in a while...
...but i realized i really just like to make noise.
rythmic noise, sounds with a pattern, but noise none the less.
but maybe this is ok?
i cant be the only one.
there must be an untapped market of people out there that dont like or 'get' musick, but would possibly identify with what i excrete on a daily basis?
what could i call this new genre?
suddenly a whole new vista of opportunity has opened for me and my non-existant talent...
please discuss...

You are not the only one. I tried very hard to be a "musician" for a while which was very frustrating because music doesn't come naturally to me. Then I let go of my preconceptions of what music should be and learned to take great satisfaction in making noise. I still enjoy the challenge of trying to write a "song" but ultimately results aren't my primary, so even if I don't end up with a "song", I still enjoyed making noise.
Though, I do like to call my noise "music", just to piss off the real musicians.

Is that one of the new sub-genres of house music or trance? I always forget...djanthonyw wrote:Rap.

There are entire genres devoted to noise, rhythmic and otherwise.

ah, that is a bit different. Then again it's not really. Do what comes naturally, be it in the form of a structured song or not. As far as finding a community of people with similar tastes/approaches to music... visit the music cafe forum, listen around and you might find the community you're looking for. It couldn't hurt to try.heathen wrote:iwuz thinking dark psytrance, but its all good.

Good advice, Justin.justin3am wrote: Do what comes naturally, be it in the form of a structured song or not.
Hell, for some of us, both forms can come naturally.

You don't need to be making complete compositions on your own to be a musician.
Maybe you should be working with other people in a band or other collaborative situation where you just add your bit to the whole.
That's what musicians have usually done before people started thinking of themselves as producers.
I'm better in a band than as a producer, though I also like working on my own.

What you have not told us is whether you like your music/noise or not!
If you do, then keep at it whatever other folks tell you! It is very, very unlikely that what you think sounds good will not sound good to others, and enough 'others' to make your contribution valuable.
On the other hand, if your material is of a 'genre' or character that is so uniquely 'bad' that no-one likes it, it will be valued for its uniqueness ( if you let enough folks hear it ), and as a consequence, be liked! ... even studied!
Unless you are looking for commercial success on the back of a genre that has already been done, then why worry?
By all means learn what you need to learn in order to produce your material to a standard which suits you, but most importantly, keep doing stuff! the worst that can happen is that you'll get better!

thanks for all the replies...
my post started out as trolling, really. and frustration...
i can pick up my guitar, and come up with a verse and chorus in not much more time than it takes to actually play them.
and in not much more time i can come up with a melody over the changes.
but its not what i want to accomplish...
as far as guitar pop goes, i love that band from boston... the swirlies... and of course they are kinda the poor mans version of my bloody valentine...
but i dont come up with that shit.
i come up with nasty pop music.
i love goa trance, psy trance, and dark psy.
but is that what comes out of my... muse?
no.
nasty guitar pop crap.
all i want is to produce a darkpsy track that fuks with peoples minds and moves their arses...
i end up with half finished dead ends...
how f**king hard could it be....
arrgghht!!

It's not as easy as people round here sometimes suggest, that's for sure ... you have to discover the secret psy-formula.heathen wrote:all i want is to produce a darkpsy track that fuks with peoples minds and moves their arses...
