Can the Mopho do tight punchy basslines?

Have a listen on the Prophet 08 demos as well.
The mopho is basically the same synth engine, only monophonic, with extra sub-osc's and optional feedback.
Some of the presets are actually from prophet08 patches.

If you use the feedback and filter audio modulation you can get some fuzzy stuff. And since that is the major difference I guess that is why that is shown in the demos.

Yeah, it can though it's funny, I don't think of it in that way as I really like pushing it. To me the difference between VA and A mostly is how they "break." Like a ceramic vase compared to a plastic reproduction. Sitting on a shelf holding water and a flower you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. Knock them off that shelf and watch one bounce and maybe crack and watch the other shatter. To me that's the interesting part. If you don't care about that too much, I bet a synth like Sawer will save you $300. Your best bet though, is to find a local shop like Guitar Center that's got a 30 day return policy and bring it home and beat on it for a while. There's nothing like a personal demo to make it apparent that it will or won't work in your world. For a long time I listened to the Synth Squad demos and thought, "This is what they've been crowing about for so long?" However a few nights with the demo made me understand what it was about and how it could be used in my set up. I was even slightly disappointed with the Prophet '08 for a short time when I unboxed it until I dug deeper into it's sounds and made them mine.

zerocrossing - What do you think about Synth Squad vs. Mopho / Tetra? Which route would you recommend? I had tried the Synth Squad demo last Fall and it sounded pretty sterile and digital to me, but I'm gonna give it another shot.

I suspect that is DCAM - himalaya is doing presets for it. Might even jump on that

When using Synth Squad don't forget to render tracks at 24 bit 96 k and over sample at 32x. You'll pretty much forget about wanting a real analog synth for its sound at this point.

I'd give it another shot for sure. Again, depends on your tastes, but I really like it. When I first heard the mp3 examples my response was, "that's the breakthough they were crowing about?!" I didn't hear it... I still don't. I think Poly-ana and Sawer do a better job of that. However, taken on their own, they've got great character. I wouldn't call them cold. However, if I was given the choice of a Tetra or Synth Squad I'd go for the Tetra in a heart beat but if I could only afford Synth Squad I'd still have a hell of a good time with it.

That said, if I were limited to $250 I'd probably buy Sawer, ACE and Olga before Synth Squad... oop I think I went over budget. You get the idea.

i just bought a mopho today cause there was a sale at the store and i could pay for it over a few months.

i could've waited a bit longer and gotten the keyboard version with more control for double the price, but the allure of the module was i have limited space.

the hard choice would be deciding between tetra and mopho keyboard cause they around the same price.

i plugged it in for the first time today. i was totally moved by the sound. it's one thing to try these out in the store, but when it's at home in your setup you can really understand how it will fit.

it's my first analog synth. i know there is some debate about analog vs. digital in this thread, and it's one of the most common debate in this forum overall. for starters my novation k-station and ms2000r do not hold a candle to the fire that comes out of the mopho. and then on the vst level i have never heard a soft-synth punch like this thing does. and this was just a few patches.

obviously the vsts are way more convenient, but this little guy sits on the desk and offers something different. i wanted a moog little phatty for a long time and it was never in my budget. this can give me something similar for a lot cheaper. i regret not buying one earlier now!

Personally I think the DSI stuff sounds better than the Moog stuff. I think they're creamier / more lush. I'll probably be staying with software, but if I do get a hardware synth again I'll probably go with a DSI.

lol! well i must give that product a shot soon cause i'm looking to upgrade my vst arsenal. also looking at waldorf largo.

edit: also converting this to mp3 made me realize just how much we lose with this codec because the wave file has a lot of those nice subtle harmonics that come from the synth.

Yea, in the future I'm hoping a lossless form of compression like flac becomes standard... or even regular wav files.

Hello, folks. I'm interested in buying my first analog synth. Seeing as the Mopho is the cheapest, and has a lot of the features I like, it seems like it would be great for me.

The only thing is, out of all the youtube video's I've watched, the Mopho seems to have a very fuzzy quality to it...I'm not sure if people are just trying to over exploit one minor characteristic of this synth or it just naturally sounds like this. But I have yet to hear any demos that had those tight, punchy, arpeggiated(or not arpeggiated) basslines. I'm having a hard time finding examples of the exact sound I'm talking about, but hopefully someone will understand this.

Can someone direct me to videos or just reassure me that the Mopho can do this? Thanks!

I know you specifically said "analog" and I have heard a lot of good things about Mopho. But if Mopho turns out to be not your thing (but you still want hardware) do take a look at the MicroKorg XL or MiniAK, because the analog modelling on these is pretty damn good. The MicroKorg's synth engine is also very deep and can go way beyond analog if you want it to. Plus it looks cool—and that's hugely important.
