Apple's new loop format.

I thought that one of the wiz-es who wrote acid was snapped up by apple and thus soundtrack was born. Now that apple also owns emagic...you'd think there would be some collaboration.

Yes. The new Logic versions (Pro and Express) will support those new files / tempo independent loops. It's still not certain though if one can do realtime timestretch/pitchshift in Logic's arrange though...

There’s a downloadable SDK for Apple Loops. I haven’t tried it but it says it provides the tools and guidelines for creating audio loops in the Apple Loops format.

So how does one convert normal loops into apple-loops?

Well if these "Apple Loops" are the same as the loops that are in Soundtrack, there's a utility that comes with SoundTrack named "SoundTrack Loop Utility" (surprise, surprise )

What you do is that you open up your loops and define the content, tempo, pitch, etc. on the first page, and then click apply. It's possible to do batches, so you could highlight several files that you know are at a certain tempo and convert these as a batch. What SLU does is add a tag with the info to the AIFF file, and that's it. This tag is then read by SoundTrack and GarageBand (I assume GB works the same)

If you need to dig deeper into setting up the transients, there's also a second page that looks like ReCycle, in which you can set up the transient (or hitpoints or whatever) and move them if the detection wasn't according to your liking. You can also set up a fixed division, say 1/16 notes, and the loop will be divided in 16 equalparts.

Don't know if that puts any light on the subject, but just to let you know that it's no rocket science to adjust your current sample library into Apple Loops (still assuming that it's the same as the Soundtrack loops)
