Removable sessions

Hello everybody. First post here on KVR but not the last, i hope...
I am using cantabile to create sessions that i will be using on another computer. The sessions and vst's are all on my ext. HD but Cantabile is installed on my PC. I fear that when i load my sessions up on a new machine, the plugins/vst's won't function.
I guess it is a problem of relative/absolute position. The sessions and the plugins remain in the same position relative to each other, but their absolute position changes (The drive letter, i suppose)
Can anybody tell me if there will be any problems. I would test it on my laptob, but i am afraid of messing anything up, as i have about 25 sessions on there... And if it will be a problem, is there a way around it?
Hope you guys can help!
Thank you

Hi jonnaraev,
First of all: welcome to the forum.
Concerning your question: I think the problem will be some of the vsts: probably some of them can simply be copied by copying the .dll (or in your case leave them in the same position on the ext hdd). Others (and most of the commercial plugs) have to be installed on the new OS again as they are registrated in the registry or the like.
After done so, you should be able to find your vsts again in cantabile. Then it should not be a problem to use the created sessions again (if you are really unsure about this, simply create a copy of the cantabile folder to test it first).
hope this helps, regards, humphrey

Thank you for the advice, humphrey.
I only use .dll vst's actually, so that may play to my advantage. I'm just worried that i will have to tweak all the presets again when i move them.
I just found a memory stick, so i may just try copying a session or two over tomorrow, i'll let you know how it works out

Well, I don't think this will be an issue. The hosts I know (and so does cantabile as far as I'm familiar with it) create a reference list of the plugs available. So there should not be a connection between plugs and sessions beside this reference list. This would mean f.e. that you could send me a copy of your sessions and I should be able to use them if all the plugs you used in the sessions are available on my PC. From this point of view: after installing cantabile you should have a look on this list in cantabile (you see it, when you try to load a plugin): you have to clearify that every plug you use is visible here.
Btw: you don't really need the stick to do your test: you could simply make a copy of the sessions and put it into a folder of your choise.
Nevertheless good luck, humphrey

Using a memory stick isn't a bad idea at all - but why copy? What about loading sessions directly from there? To put all you personal performance data can be very convenient. I know a professional entertainer who sometimes travels just with a memory stick when he knows there is a compatible HW workstation on location...

This is good news
So I just have to make sure Cantabile has recognised all my vst's (choose and scan the right vst-folder)...
Thank you very much for your help, humphrey and TIuser!
