Set up a Reverb send pre fader (put the reverb 100 % wet), turn the track fader all the way down so you just hear the reverb FX and no direct signal. Additionally roll of some of the high and low frequencies.

quick example:

first the wind sound totally dry, then with the method I described above

Thanks for the link Meffy.
I figured there were binaural radio shows somewhere.
I'm listening to one now, and strangely enough,it doesn't have what the 'Barbershop' example has. It's not even close. Odd.
It's the Neumann KU-81 binaural system. Should sound great but it's not the same.
If you're streaming over the Internet that might be the problem. Or it could be because these are pretty old shows. I bought some of them back in the 1980s, on cassette 'cos that's what they were available in then.

It's not the streaming, the 'barbershop' is a stream, that I later dloaded.No difference.
I'm guessing it's partly the room they're in...don't know really. What i'm eluding to is, the quality of the effect may be more then just the head and good mics. It's maybe more tricky then it appears.

*nodnod* I certainly don't understand all of what I've read concerning the effects involved.

I'm reading the wikipedia now. I know for sure 'combing' had a direct influence in how well you hear positioning. I'm on open-air AKG phones, and the combing was very clear to me. They do 'externalization' pretty well compared to my other closed phones. I haven't read anything about phase yet...haha

It's probably between the room, the head and the mics. There's also the point that your brain has learned to interpret delays and attenuations of frequencies produced by the interaction with the structure of your unique ear and head shape. Dummy heads and ears will vary in how different they are to yours, and the recordings produced will be accordingly effective at deceiving your brain.

There could be some additional tonal processing, but there's not any kit I know of that would aid the binaural effect.

Yes. From what i'm reading, everything you said are the facts.
It's odd, on the other hand, if you search youtube for virtual barbershop, you will see just how many people were intensely affected from the realism of the recording. Considering this, it doesn't appear it's all that specialized.

Yeah, I did think that after posting this actually -- the barbershop is definitely one of the better ones I've heard too, so how the head shape matches might not be the reason for why this one is so good.

This one was also very convincing: http://www.virtualbarber.org/page.php?32

Again, in front seems to be the hardest to fake. The matchbox sounded more above than forward in space to me. Amazing stuff though, I almost have a physical reaction due to how convincing the proximity sounds.

Finally...an explanation for why I seemed to be using 'comb filtering' for position placement information.

From Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head-relat ... r_function
The head-related transfer function is involved in resolving the cone of confusion, a series of points where ITD and ILD are identical for sound sources from many locations around the "0" part of the cone. When a sound is received by the ear it can either go straight down the ear into the ear canal or it can be reflected off the pinnae of the ear, into the ear canal a fraction of a second later. The sound will contain many frequencies, so therefore many copies of this signal will go down the ear all at different times depending on their frequency (according to reflection, diffraction, and their interaction with high and low frequencies and the size of the structures of the ear.) These copies overlap each other, and during this, certain signals are enhanced (where the phases of the signals match) while other copies are canceled out (where the phases of the signal do not match). Essentially, the brain is looking for frequency notches in the signal that correspond to particular known directions of sound.

But still, that same wiki article sez;
If another person's ears were substituted, the individual would not immediately be able to localize sound, as the patterns of enhancement and cancellation would be different from those patterns the person's auditory system is used to. However, after some weeks, the auditory system would adapt to the new head-related transfer function.
Again, in front seems to be the hardest to fake. The matchbox sounded more above than forward in space to me. Amazing stuff though, I almost have a physical reaction due to how convincing the proximity sounds.
The same article again, seems to be saying they haven't got a good handle on the front/back thing yet....haha;
HRTFs are typically measured in an anechoic chamber to minimize the influence of early reflections and reverberation on the measured response. HRTFs are measured at small increments of θ such as 15° or 30° in the horizontal plane, with interpolation used to synthesize HRTFs for arbitrary positions of θ. Even with small increments, however, interpolation can lead to front-back confusion, and optimizing the interpolation procedure is an active area of research.

Why not finally ruin the promise of your early directorial career by releasing what appears to be a big-budget remake of Mortal Kombat with the word 'Bender' in the title?
