They can load Dx7 sysex,but same patch sound different,just to say a patch will sound thin and metallic in Hexter,sound more fat in Rhino.

I don't have the real thing so i can't made A/B comparison.

So let me know which is the most realistic emulation

None loads them properly and all have differences from the original, but buttom line Hexter is the most accurate DX7 emulation plugin, and sounds best, so load and tweak it.

I've owned a DX7 and I think FM Heaven comes closest to any vsti I've tried but it's still not a 100% match.

dunno, i owned a cheap dx27, but each time i loaded sysex into current softsynths i got unsatisfying sonic results, and everything sounds bland and flat. Maybe its just me.

I don't know if it does, but the old version FM7 ues to load sysex directly.

FM8 does as well.

I have no idea which one does the most realistic emulation but for me it doesn't matter either. For me the beauty of (especially old dx7 era) FM patches is that they usually don't hog the whole frequency range for themselves and thus they tend to sit better in any mix. For example Rambo soundtracks (by Jerry Goldsmith) are full of combination of orchestra and DX7.

nuff said. nailled it. there's no closer emulation. and it reads .sys files from the dx7, the tx81z and probably some others.

I own a Yamaha TX-802, which is like a bunch of DX7s in one rack mount unit. I also own FM8. FM8 doesn't have anywhere near the high frequency qualities of the original. When you load DX7 patches in FM8, the upper register sounds almost like it's going through analog clipping cicuitry, where the metallic ultra-high-end of the sound is squashed into lower frequencies that sound a bit distorted (though it's more pleasant-sounding than actual digital distortion...which isn't saying much). To generalize, FM8 sounds flat and lifeless with less high-frequency information as compared to a DX7.

I have found a great way to convert DX7 patches though. There's a piece of free software called DXulator (created by Hans van den Tillaart) that is a bit weird to learn how to use, but what it does is turn DX7 patches into soundfonts. These can then be played with a free soundfont player. In my opinion, these soundfonts sound much more like a DX7 than FM8 by far. Also, once loaded, the sounds can be tweaked in a user-friendly way by your soundfont player (unlike real DX7). If you use SONAR, you already have a few great soundfont players built in. It took me a few hours fiddling with DXulator to learn to use it well, and it was more than worth it.

Here's a recording of a soundfont I created from the Jazz Guitar patch made famous by Jan Hammer's Miami Vice tunes. Note the crisp high end.

And here's a recording that uses a single soundfont I created from a DX7 patch called Activate. Both the bass and lead sounds use the same patch. This is the same patch Hammer used on "Rum Cay" from his Escape From Television CD.

All these sounds when loaded into FM8 sound dull and lifeless by comparison, and remember this is free solution that gives access to literally thousands of DX7 patches.
