Interval Samples: How do they work?

So when reading about all of the bigger, newer libraries (for example Adagio or HS) everybody mentions the "interval samples" for more realistic legato. I understand the concept you have notes A and B, and you sample the interval between the two and it all sounds great.
But how?
If I am playing note A, and then I decide I want to play note B, if by hitting note B I trigger instead of note B, "interval between A and B and then note B" note B will play late. Right? For this to not happen "interval between A and B" must be played prior to when note B would be played... but this doesn't happen without a time machine.

'interval samples' is an old term from gigastudio days, involving scripts in Kontakt or 'iMidi' in giga.
Hollywood Strings stays with that kind of marketing lingo, has 'legato interval sampling'. 3 different types of legatos: bow change, ie., the bow changes directions without leaving the string; slur, which is basically a hammer-on/pull off while the bow is continuous, and portamento, which is a glide from one note to the next.
that's just a matter of selecting the patch the performs these things, which are scripted to select that variation of the patch according to velocity, or a position of a controller, or whatever. All 3 are in the patch but behave as scripted when you tell it to with a midi instruction.
If there is a fast and a slow version, it will behave more like a player does that particular fast or slow move because that's what they have sampled for that patch. and you choose that patch per your tempo. that's all 'interval sampling' means, they have sampled certain things to behave more realistically and it's available by how you control it with midi. There is no confusion of 'what interval'.
another example which is what I have actually used is VSL, which could switch to a 'trill' patch, although I'm providing the trill it's a more viable trill than a regular legato patch. It could be switched to from 'legato' when you play fast enough to warrant a trill, or by a keyswitch, or a position of a controller, whatever you assign. I don't know if the Play engine allows you to assign the way you want the script to behave or not.

The automatic trill you mention in VSL that is triggered by the speed at which you play, for that to work, it would have to register how quickly you are playing and then, switch over to the trill/interval sample. But as that sentence shows, the logic of that is backwards. One plays quickly when they want a trill, they don't initially get the trill sample but instead get the regular sample, then VSL recognizes the speed at which you have played the trill and switches to the trill samples, but at that point you may have moved on. This logic applies to other forms of interval-like samples too (for instance legato). If anyone could explain what I'm missing here I'd appreciate. Apologies if I'm not being clear.

well, I don't like it, I have presets they made which use that and I'm pretty much changing it to keyswitch. it must be useful to someone. you set a threshold and you're using that dimension specifically for a trill, which one is far more likely to plan for and arrange for in the editor than actually perform, and so the second note of a trill is known to be a trill by how fast it follows the last note. I don't think it's illogical in itself but it's caused difficulties for how I want to work it, I'd prefer not.

not at all, you're doing the trill. and once you're playing below the threshold of the speed control, you aren't trilling, and it returns to the other slot. It's the beginning of the trill which has been tricky for me, and it mitigates that advantage. For me.comma wrote: but at that point you may have moved on.

if you're trying to get an idea of what to do by reading words on websites, or EW's horrendous manuals, don't. A waste of time. I will say that VSL's paradigm and graphical interface is FAR more intuitive as you have all of it laid out in front of you so you can watch the behavior, than Play or Kontakt.
At a certain price point they're all going to be competitive as far as realism, so... download the manual for HS. If you find it hard to understand, there is more than one reason: one is it's written, and organized exceedingly poorly. the other will be that you haven't done this kind of sequencing and you're relying on someone's description. If HS sounds fantastic where something else doesn't, you're compelled to buy it, it will work and it isn't rocket science. But I didn't learn any of this from a manual.

no, as soon as one note follows the last at a certain interval [OF TIME], it switches. using it presupposes you plan a trill and are at a dimension that gives you that kind of switch owing to your plan to make a trill. Otherwise you're getting the trill patch every time you pass the threshold. the reason I don't care for that one is that I have to enter a switch to get me to the dimension anyway, I may as well enter one switch to access the patch.
IE: it's isolated in a matrix [of dimensions] in such a preset in order to avoid every time you pass the threshold you get it. I'm keyswitching to a matrix to get that patch assigned via speed control, I may as well assign a keyswitch to do that directly. Some people would have the matrix just have speed control and plan for that. I'm no keyboardist so that's not that useful, but their presets contain such-like.
this applies not at all to EWQL Play. Vienna Instruments has the patches in slots, arranged in horizontal and vertical rows, in 'a matrix'. You can have a number of matrices in a 'preset'.
