I'm looking to acquire a versatile filter plug-in for creative sound manipulation. I'm currently trialing U-He Filterscape. Are there any other plugins I should try out?

Soundtoys Filterfreak and filterfreak2 , they are ace

Good question. I can't think of another plugin which does what Filterscape does at the moment.

The Filterfreak plugins are excellent.

FabFilter Volcano 2 has lots of modulation options, and sounds great.

Cheers guys :) I'm already pretty set on buying FabFilter Pro-Q, so maybe I should just as well get that and Volcano as part of a bundle? The Volcano looks pretty good, I'll get the trial when I get home.

Volcano is pretty good. For a really great sounding filter you can't beat Dr. Device by Audio Damage. Man that thing sounds good. A simple plug but the ability to automate and animate it's XY panel makes it super fun.

+1 for Volcano and don't forget Quadfrohmage that hasn't been mentioned yet.

+1 for Volcano 2. I got it in the FX bundle and it was one of my best bundle purchases. Expensive but worth every penny.

savantgarde, can you inform us what you feel Filterscape doesn't do that is making you look elsewhere? "creative sound manipulation" is a pretty vague term. :)

As you can see from my OP, I'm trialing Filterscape. I want to trial at least one alternative to this before settling on one of them. Besides, I hate the crackles of the Filterscape trial version, whereas the Volcano is fully functional for 30 days so I can put it to proper use in the meantime.

I'm missing one feature in Volcano from Filterscape though, the envelope follower doesn't seem to have a threshold parameter. I played quite a bit with that in Filterscape as it made rather a large difference regarding the envelope's behaviour.

+1 for Volcano2, killer filter

Sorry about that, I missed the word trial. :) I just didn't want to throw out the name of plugin x/y/z without actually knowing what you did or did not like about FS.

If you like the env follower you can also check out Zebrify, the FX version of Zebra2. It's a bit different from FS -- and in your case would come with a free synth. ;)

Never tried Volcano, but got Twin, so can imagine modulation possibilities are mad. :) On the other side, I found absolutely amazingly sounding Tone2 BiFilter. :)
