For those of you that produce Psytrance... I'm wondering what is better for that Psytrance gating effect.

I currently use CamelSpace and I have Reason 6 which comes w/ various gating options. I also use Ableton Live which has a gate effect, but I can't ever get the sound I'm looking for out of it.

Post an example of the sound and maybe someone can help ... CamelSpace and similar plugins are great for this kind of thing, but there may be some other technique that's used.

The gate in Live isn't like a trance gate (sequenced gate). It's a traditional gate that reduces the volume or mutes when signal drops below the threshold level. You can simulate a sequenced gate using the side chain input but that requires some configuration.

Thanks ... now the question is which sound or rhythm out of that clip are you trying to re-create? The harder noise type sound that is rhythmic / cyclic?

Are you trying to recreate the sound or just figure how to do a similar gate? The gate itself is a very easy operation, and this one sounds like it has a release envelope so it's smooth.

I guess just the gate because the sound is probably more difficult to explain.

Most of the time when I do gates they sound too stuttery. I guess I should experiment w/ the envelope more.

These types of rhythmic sounds are usually created using multiple LFO's modulating 1 or more filters in combination with a gate sequencer. In your example the sound is basically white or pink noise with 2 filters - one band pass and one low pass. At least one of the filters is probably tuned so that the result sounds musical, rather than just random filter amounts, with good amount of resonance.

What follows is just an example ... because it's always different, and these types of poly-rhythms are used all over dance music (not just psy). Start with some constant white noise. Add a band pass filter, cutoff frequency is 500 Hz. A 1 bar ramp up LFO to modulate the filter cutoff by 25%. You now have a filter that is rising every 4 beats.

Add a 2nd filter, but make this one a low pass filter. Set the filter cutoff to (say) 6000 Hz so that you can still hear the output of the first filter. Modulate this filter cutoff with a ramp down or triangle LFO set to 1 beat. You should now have a rhythmic sound, because everything is tempo synced but it's a bit boring.

Add a trance gate to help define the rhythm in your track. Try different LFO speeds. You might use a 3rd LFO to modulate one of the filters, or you could assign an external controller to the filter cutoff and "play" the filters in time with the music.

Yeah, for the most part. Just for clarification 1 beat is 1/16?

Yes 1 bar = 4 beats. CamelSpace uses musical terms (bars), so 1 bar is 4 beats, 1/4 bar is 1 beat etc.

When using CamelSpace for this type of effect I would suggest creating the basic poly-rhythm using the synth, and then add CamelSpace for additional filtering, gating, delay + reverb. If you're working with loops, use multiple instances of CamelSpace (or whatever filter + gate plugin).

I'm having trouble tuning the sound but I guess that's just preferential.
