Hello people!
I've made a M4L device to workaround this infamous Live's limitation.
It has 8 knobs, macro style. So far it works well for me, so I thought I'd share it.

Hey felonytrance !
The device works really easily and very well.
I don't have time to make a video, but I've patched it and use it on an old coreduo 2008 macbook, and a fully mapped device with all 8 parameters automated at the same time takes approximately 5-7% of cpu according to Live's cpu indicator.

But is it worth buying MFL? If you're interested in patching then why not, but if it's just for one device... maybe you'll beter wait and hope for it in Live 9.

does it record the automation to envelopes? that's what we need.

Yeah it records automations to envelopes. There's no inside sequence recording or whatever. It records the CC messages to envelopes, and those CCs are attached to parameters... that's just it! Everything is in the clip just like your midi notes... etc

I've updated the 2 ClipAutomation devices. There was a little error which could cause the device to respond to unwanted CC messages ?! Now it's not a problem anymore. Download links are still the same.

Cool. Nice job. I'll check this out for sure

What I've done in the past is less than perfect; MIDI learn on the plugins themselves, that then the Live sees as CC messages, and those are included in the clip but without a reference to the actual name of the VST param by name, e.g. instead of cutoff it sees CC74, for example

Your device shows VST param by name in the envelope dropdown? Or is it still MIDI CC and just works without requiring the plugin to have it's own MIDI learn facilities?

Yep, it's attached to the CC number, but it's not a big deal IMHO. You can easily find to what parameter which CC is assigned as your controller as to send CC that are in a row (I'm not sure how to explain it in english however, but your 8 knobs have to send , for example, CC 12 for the first one, 13 for the 2nd, 14 for 3rd...).

Oh don't worry I'm not buying MFL until I try bitwig and then see what live 9 has to offer.

the MFL community is still pretty weak at the moment and there still needs to be be a larger library to make it worth buying.

Again I still think we'll see MFL included in live 9 (or at least a runtime)

No, the device is not "locked". There's no magic I would hide inside it. It's very straightforward, because Live's limitation is very easy to workaround now with M4L (no third-party application, everthing is on the clip which is automated...).

Record clip automations in Live with... the ClipAutomation device !
