The hardest part for some is coming up with an idea that hasn't been done, and done a hundred times. For others, original ideas seem to flow like water.

I do it myself, since this is my sideproject from work with.... well no budget in that sense. As soon as the windows port of the synth is finished and that is well tested as well I will buy some ads here on KVR or google ads or similiar.

Have you been marketing it by youself? Marketing is a neat thing, which (I believe) shouldn't be done by the developer himself. (For example, there are ios\android publishers like chillingo, which are said to do marketing work very well). I'd recommend you a publisher... if I knew at least one myself! Seeking vst(i) publisher in google does not reveals anything... I wonder if there is a vst(i) publisher anywhere in the net?

UI. It's 80% of the code.

Good post sascha. Workflow and human-computer interaction have been the hardest for me.

I've done my share of software design flaws / suffered limits in foresight which have required extensive refactoring.

Understanding that :-o :x  VST SDK. I haven't worked with anything so convoluted and overly complicated since sliced bread was invented.

For me the hardest thing when I tried the VST SDK was to get any decent sound out at all. That's why I use SynthEdit / SynthMaker since it actually gives me the freedom to actually finishing something in somewhat decent amount of time.
