I'm looking to acquire a high-quality, relatively transparent, compressor to use throughout my mixes (I make electronic, experimental, music). I'm currently trialing the FabFilter Pro-C and am liking it quite a bit so far, I find especially the GUI very helpful as it visualizes what is happening to the signal. I'm hardly the expert in audio production though, so I'm looking for some input on whether the FabFilter would be a wise purchase? Should I look into other products? I already have the NI Vintage Compressors, should I need the analog, gritty character.

for ultra flexibility you should demo DMG Compassion.
it also gives you a visual representation of what it's doing to your audio.
also it's insanely deep and flexible, but only when you want it to be

How would you say it compares to Pro-C? That is, why should I eventually pick it over the latter?

as much as i love COMPassion, if you are looking for something very simple more similar to Pro-C then i would recommend Voxengo Polysquasher...it's very simple and sounds very good...
...but if you want the best then get COMPassion...

Thanks guys. You've convinced me to grab demo versions of Compassion and EQuality

Thinking I might grab the bundle of the two, as I'm also after a versatile EQ (had my sights set on FabFilter Pro-Q so far).

I agree with the simplicity argument, and FF definitely got that down

I've installed and tried DMG now though, and I don't find them difficult to use at all! The knobs are perhaps better tuned in FF's GUIs, as I find myself struggling a bit more with the DMG equivalents.

Your DAWs compressors are likely fine for a clean sound. Pro-C is clean, but the UI is fantastic. I never liked COMPassion's UI - and I am an EQuality lover. FF have great user interfaces - makes them a pleasure to use. Sonnox Dynamics is another really fantastic and flexible workhorse compressor.

I think the price for the EQuality/Compassion bundle is quite OK, so I don't really factor that in. I haven't got much of an impression of Compassion's sonic character yet, but it sounds to me as if EQuality in "analog" mode somehow sweetens the sound compared to the Pro-Q. Take that with a grain of salt though, as I'm rather the amateur

Reacomp is real nice. I wish they would make a 64 bit version for people with other DAWs.

Check out PSP compressors, Mastercomp can be very transparent.

Looking for a compressor, should I get the FabFilter Pro-C?
