Hi!
I've tried and tried and tried to study how to play the notes of a song, for example, this one I'm trying to recreate; http://soundcloud.com/matsgulbrandsen/housebloggen-no-avicii -warm-up @ 10.08, the melody. How do I know what notes are in there? whats the best instrument to play this on? pure piano or sylenth1 sound or something? thanks in advance! |

Jontah....
Having a musical ear takes years of experience... when you first start out there just seems to be too many notes going on at the same time... you are on the right track though... pick one instrument and try to decipher the notes... Another great training device is to train your mind to hear intervals between two notes.... like a 6th interval has the same movement as the first two syllables of the melody from "My BONnie lies over the ocean". Just something you need to practice like everything else in music. Jim |

The way I see it if you aren't prepared to roll up your sleeves and learn the very basics then your heart isn't into music in which case don't expect others to help you. Theres no fast track here. Its never too late to start and every bit of new information you learn takes you one step closer to expressing your ideas. |

Honestly, I study music, I pay for my studies, alot more than 8000Euros, it's not about "stealing" others musics, it's about studying how they set up the tempo and the actual notes, just like practicing any song from youtube in order to learn how to play piano. I'm actually practicing piano every day, but I'm still learning, therefore I need the help to get the midi file for this, because my problem isn't to find a melody, my problem is how to make it "dancy", and it would be interesting to see what intervals they've used. It's only for pure study and knowledge, nothing else. |

When I was 18 I was in a rock cover band and to get material we would spend hours and hours playing pop songs over and over to get the song down and the arrangement. It wasn't that we were trying to train our ears or learn anything about music theory, it was shear desperation to get material for the band so we could play our bar gigs.
Consequently, having done this for a couple of years we became proficient at lifting music off recordings and in the process trained our ears and learned a great deal about melody, harmonization, structure, and arranging in the process. No one ever gave us a short cut if there was even anyone around who could. There is no substitute for doing it the hard way in the long run. To me KVR is a place to learn how to transcribe not get free transcriptions. Big difference. That melody at 10:08 is a piece of cake if you sit down with a keyboard and try to play along with it. Loop the section so it plays over and over and keep stabbing at the keys until you hit the right notes. You will be amazed at how easy it becomes. That passage is pretty well articulated and follows the chords so finding the notes is not that hard. But do yourself a favor and at least try. |

Come on man, it's not even hard! I'm not all that good yet at transcribing music, but if I put 10 minutes into it with a piano, I'd have it. First try to determine the scale. Once you have the scale, the rest is easy. And you'll learn something about intervals in the process. At least try it. If the speed is overwhelming you, use some sort of pitch-perfect slowdown tool, like Capo for the iPod / iPhone, so you have more time to analyze the melody in your head. |

Alright, so I tried on a few songs and I've been working on Nause latest release, this is what I came up with:
http://www47.zippyshare.com/v/80985899/file.html (starts at 0.34 sec in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=09mdi 0Ng9oE&noredirect=1) I think I expressed myself in a bad way, what I mean is that I'm having troubles finding the right way to get the same feeling as some tunes, for example this one by Nause. I've found the key (I think?) but I cannot seem to get the same feel with just the piano (I know they use alot of different sounds aswell, but I'm only focusing on getting the notes right here), I'm having a hard time telling whether it's going up or down, eventhough I can hear it in some way, I'm finding it hard to same feeling over the melody, or maybe it's just the sounds that are tricking my mind? I'm still learning, so take it easy guys. And believe me, I AM trying actually! I appreciate the help though! cheers. |

Sounds more like you are having problems getting the groove to sit right The soundcloud piano riff has been time stretched/warped by a touch. Thats why its sounds so weird. But the youtube clip is clear enough so once you get the notes roughly correct turn off any snap to grid functions in your sequencer and start sliding the notes both forwards and backwards a little until it matches the groove. Thats where the feeling comes from. If everything is quantized it'll just sound stiff with no groove even if the notes are right. For the lead line Sylenth should be fine but for the piano sound the korg m1 vst house piano should suffice. If you really want to nail it load up the tune in your sequencer and loop small sections (perhaps 4 bars at a time) Just slow it down in your sequencer to make it easier. |

Just the two cents from a beginner... Always remember you're doing better than you think you do. Although i'm not practicing the way you do, but I tend to underestimate myself. Good Luck! |
