Has anybody noticed these things are starting to rise in value?
Why on earth though! I used to own one and it was the most useless piece of junk ever.
That said, it is still the only piece of gear I've ever sold so I kind of want it back.
Can anybody give me a reason to get one again?

I know that MC202s are desirable becuase they are kinda like an SH101 mated to a TB303's sequencer but I can't imagine why anyone would want an MC303.
Get an old Electribe ER-1. You can find them for <$100 (not on eBay) and they are tons of fun. Get an ES-1 to go with it and go nuts.

Why on earth would they be rising in value??? I used to own one and the only reason I had it is because I won it from a local music store. In my whole life I have only given away two pieces of gear and that was one of them. What a piece of crap. My only regret was that I wasted any part of my life with that thing.

I still have one in a closet somewhere. At the time, I bought it strictly to use as a drum module, not a "groovebox". I can't imagine why they would be going up in value.

Only a few months ago they could be snapped up for less than £100, now they often hit £150. True this is only £50, but it is also 50%.

One of my mates is a 'hardware only' nutcase who hasn't got any pc or mac in his studio and used to sequence all his gear from a 303!!!! Funniest part was hearing (seeing???) his mpc being sequenced from it!!!!
I used to say when I 1st met him, 'errrr, isn't the mpc a better sequencer' but he was comfortable with the 303 and stuck with it. He now uses a Juno G!!! Lol!
Takes him f**king ages to make a tune, but he's a really talented musician so its always good what he does put out. This in turn blinkers him into thinking 'hardware is better' when in reality its hindering him massively.
Stubborn, very stubborn, but a top bloke.
Anyway, I've got the Roland EG101 which is a MC303 & DR202 sampler stuck together with a keyboard, a D-Beam and some crazy loud speakers on the side!!!! Only time I ever use it now is for 'Smack My Bitch Up' style busking, bontempi style
Seriously, the in built 'phrases' are hilarious - The sounds themselves ain't that bad for the time and my pc at the time couldn't handle anywhere near the equivelent sounds in VSTi's (I probably had it before VSTi's were invented, and remember using it instead of LM-4 because of cpu spikes!!!) but it wouldn't even be useful as a sound module these days.
Have no idea how much they are worth as I can't really sell it because I bought it with some inheritance money I got when my grandad passed away, so there's some sentimental value to mine. I can't imagine anyone wanting one these days and therefore its probably pretty worthless.

I'm using an MC303 as an hardware sequencer for other gear, I totally ignore the internal sounds.
It's quite good as a sequencer in my opinion! You can do the following:
* Mute/unmute 8 tracks, one of which is a drum track.
* You can mute 8 different sounds of the drum track as well.
* You can do step sequencing of the drums in 909 style
* You can do step sequencing of the melody in 303 style
* You can record "live" from an external keyboard or from the local keyboard
* you can do quantize and change the shuffle in realtime
* it has several internal arpeggios whose range can be modified
I got it because I wanted a cheap sequencer for playing "live", and it works pretty ok!
Here are the main limitations i encountered:
* in 909 mode, you can record an drum instrument per time, to change from let's say kickdrum to hihat you need to stop the tune and start it again
* you can't record midi CC such as pitch bend etc

My best friend had one 10 years ago or so. I can't remember ONE SINGLE sound beeing good.

I have an Alesis MMT8 but it does not have shuffle quantize and there's no x0x step sequencing..

get the 505, as a hardware midi sequencer its a beast, and with 8 outs, you can even use some of the internal sounds thru pedals and fx as well as sequencing external gear, all the + of the 303 minus the lame 1st gen groovebox limitations of the 303

Native Instruments Maschine Mikro
You can get a used MPC500 or MPC2000 in that price range and, while they don't do step sequencing, they're wonderfully intuitive and fun to work with.
