Hey everyone,

I'm just wrapping up a new track in FL Studio when I got thinking, has anyone else noticed snobbery (In any host) about how you "SHOULD" work within it?

I was just thinking how many times i've read (In different places) about how people think you "SHOULD" work within FL Studio, and any other way is wrong.

For example, I use patterns as a block of my track - if I have 25 tracks in my song i'll put them in song order - pattern 1 could be the song intro, pattern 2 the main song, pattern 3 the first chorus and so on - but i've read people in so many places before say that the "PROPER" way of doing it in FL Studio is that pattern 1 would have part of your drums, pattern 2 another part and while I see why some people would work this way it really bugs me how they can say their way is the "PROPER" way when the biggest advantage - to me - of FL Studio is being able to work how you want. I used hardware sequencers in the 80's and 90's and loved how you work with them so i've carried that over to FL Studio. I like to play a pattern and hear everything in that patterns and be able to go in and edit it there and then, it's my way of working and I like it Smile

It just bugs me, it's the same in lots of hosts where you have "ELITISTS" who think anyone who does it different to them is wrong or amateurish.

Sorry everyone, just needed to get it out of my system. "DEEP BREATH" Smile

It probably steems out of insecurities. The end result is what matters. Do you make the music that you intend to do? Do you find it enjoyable and do you achive the goals you set up before you? If so, it really does not matter what other folks think about your creative process imho.

I happen to agree, i'm very secure in how I write my music - I write the music i'd like to buy. I'm not insecure on others opinions I just get frustrated sometimes when people act as though how they do things is gospel and anything else is wrong, you know?

I'm a big fan of 70's, 80's and 90's (Early) synthesizer music and so I tend to write with more parts than you would if you wrote something for todays charts etc ... but i'm not trying to write something for the charts, i'm trying to write something that i'd like to buy in the store and if others like it it's a bonus Smile

Personally I like using FL Studio, it produces the same results as Cubase or Reason or my old Yamaha QX5fd hardware sequencer Smile

I know. I meant other people may be insecure, not you. Someone trying to put down other folks because of choise of DAW or their working methods - its so incredibly lame.

Meh. You work however you work. My stuff is all over the place in FL. I try to put kicks on on track, bass goes there, sometimes it doesn't work out that way. I love to slice and dice midi, so I'll do an arrangement in the piano roll and slice it up and rearrange it on the playlist.
I've never got into the pattern block (old way) of doing FL.

I'm the same way, I don't use pattern blocks (Though how I described it it probably sounds like I do LOL).

I just love to sit back and play, then loop what I did and play another part, and another until i've got a basic idea all in 1 pattern then build the song up from there, it's very easy for me to work that way.

When I found FL for my host I tried quite a few at the same time and I decided then I wanted a host that works how I think and not change how I think for a host.

I've never noticed anyone say there's a specific that people SHOULD work within Cubase. Personally, I teach Cubase at a local college and think it's great that many of my students find unique ways of working with it.

Not caring what other people think helps. Laughing

It's always been the case that everyone has an opinion about everything. Been that way since the cave man days. The only difference now is the net allows everyone to express their various opinions all across the globe. HiHi

Yeah I don't care what I think, which really helps when you're as insane as me to not care about what the voices say in your head hehe Smile

it seems to me as I look back over decades those who insisted what is best for me were probably wrong far more often than right.

Well experimentation in art is one thing, but there are parts of any creative process that are defined and have a goal. Those can be done 'wrong'. There is a time and a place for experimentation.
Not to diminish it at all: It should take a while, and be a big place. Smile

But, there is also a time when you know what you want and how to get it. And that brings efficieny into consideration, and for people making a living on music, efficieny is extremely important.
So, through that someone can end up saying "Thats wrong." just because it takes twice as long to get the result.

But to say that you 'have to put kicks in pattern 1' is just stupid, and I cant believe anyone would actually say that and expect to be taken seriously.

Yeah I have not run into a lot of host-specific-workflow-snobbery, but, I have certainly seen a whole lot of people explaining the finer points of working on audio, within the context of host. Shrug

Oh and Ive seen people making fun of fruityloops for nearly fifteen years. HiHi

What I find way more interesting is how many people with certain hosts I wont name will talk to everyone as if they were all using that same host. They get a tunnel vision regarding creativity and workflow, the host they use becomes the sun and their solar system of music making so they don't think in fundamentals that everyone share across a multitude of platforms but start identifying personally with narrow sets of tools and infer that relationship onto everyone else by default. I think a couple hosts especially lend themselves easily to this mindset but its a thing I've noticed as an annoying (and subtle, sometimes hard to catch) undercurrent to forums like this.
