I totally agree. Got one myself and love it. Could be programmed either at the box itself which works very well, with the Standalone editor or the VST editor software.

The DSI Mopho or Tetra and the upcoming Waldorf Pulse 2 and the Arturia MiniBrute could be worth a look too where the lack of patch memory in the MiniBrute is a big problem IMO.
At the beginning the missing memory is no big problem but if you use the synth later (after a few months) this could be really annoying. I found the same when i had a real Minimoog Model D back in 2004/2005.

Thanks again to everybody for the input here. Just though I'd give a little update of my time with the Slim Phatty so far.

For the first 2 days I felt like throwing the thing out the window because I was getting some weird digitally interference coming through my speakers, scrolling with mouse sounded like somebody was ripping my speaker cone but after pluging it into a few other sockets around the house and going through all the equipment in my setup and some googling I took the earth out of the Phatty and then everything was crystal clear, need to get a proper solution for that soon. Unfortunately though I was quite feverish for about 5 days after I got this working (wonder if they were related :hihi:). Then spent a few days moving to a new room too which was another delay but after that I got plenty of time to sit down and play.

The low end out of this thing is amazing, like parts of the house vibrating when it's up loud enough amazing. I found most of the presets to be fairly crap tbh but it's just so easy to boot up the Phatty and play and tweak mindlessly for hours without ever getting any music made. I've never had that playability feeling from a plugin before (Diva comes close though). It has a very intuitive interface, more knobs would be nice but the majority of the time I don't miss them, especially with the pot mapping feature that allows you to map any parameter to any knob on the Phatty, very cleaver.

I also bought a CP-251 from eBay which gives you some really interesting possibilities, I do find myself eyeing up some of the other Moogerfoogers a lot too, the ring modulator and phaser are tempting me the most at the moment. Once I save a few quid again I may consider.

All in all I would definitely recommend this synth to somebody looking to venture into the world of analog. I would love another 3 Phattys to chain together for some chord action but don't think that will ever happen. Actually since I got this I find myself looking for new analog gear a lot more, I though my GAS might have calmed down for a little bit after my purchase but it's actually gotten worse, a lot worse.

I think next though I may go for a VA, something like the Nord Lead, I think I have analog covered for the moment and adding a VA would give me a lot of versatility. Will have to think about what to get though, have a birthday next month so that will hopefully give a decent bit of cash towards it (birthday donations welcome :D )

Find KvR member ford442, he solved this problem for himself.

Give the Waldorf Pulse 2 a try first.

I always like the original Nord 2, it's got a sound all its own, perfect when you want something more cutting than a real analog or a more accurate emulation will give you.

not sure where to begin , sh 101 ?

Why not begin with something that isn't 30 years old? (and overpriced in today's second hand market)

Very soon, there will be this formidable foursome available;

This might be something very special indeed. The spec has already been improved to what is seen on the website with better osc mixer, ring modulation, etc.

What part of ANALOG synth in the HARDWARE section do you not understand?

It never fails with these software wankers...

A lot of us join threads from the "What's New @ KvR Audio" bar on the right side of the site, which doesn't indicate the sub forum.

The part where the OP said,

I think the post was a response to that, not his question about analog synths, which he seems to have solved with a Slim Phatty. But I agree with you. I've yet to hear a Nord Lead example that seems worlds better than what you can do with Synth1 or Discovery Pro. Yes I know they're different. Not different enough, IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a Nord Lead 2... but not enough to pay the expensive second hand price for one... or take up the space. If a gun was held to my had and I had to do an all hardware studio... I'd probably have a Nord Lead. Even over a Virus I think.

I never get comments like this. You know, if you turn it up loud this will pretty much happen even with the cheapest of Casio keyboards.

That said, I've been in a tizzy about upgrading my ATC-1 to an ATC-x qfs and I started to think, "Maybe I should ditch my Patty to make the ATC-x happen quicker... then I played with it last night for a bit and came up with a giant sounding bass that was pretty far from the ATC-1's domain. The Phatty, contrary to some critics, can make some amazing sounds.

Yeah, I don't get it. I bet they loose sales when people happen upon one of these in a store and start going through the presets and deciding the synth sucks. Very different than my experience with DSI products, that seem to come with a lot of great presets.

I have the Cluster Flux and it's awesome. I almost like the gain-distortion part of it as much as the modulation effects. Together... awesome. In the meantime, check out Stillwell Audio's Oligarc

Thinking a synth will cure your G.A.S. is like thinking a hit of heroin will cure your addiction.

For me, I say check out the studio Electronics Boomstar that is about to come out. Its VCOs so it smokes the mopho man.

Also the minibrute looks promising as well and its only 500 bucks.

The new MFB Dominion X looks promising as well.
