No, I make them myself and compress with different compressors (if necessary).
I never use a 1176 (or any of the various clones) because it sounds too round, pumpy and squashy for my taste. I like my beats firm, tight, fat and pristine. I usually put TC MasterX3 or Bootsy Density or TOW, depending on the situation. (Mind you though, I haven't made any breaks in a while.)

Perhaps, but not the ones I use; I mostly use drumsynths or samples, layer them and combine into new sounds, then compress, eq etc. But again, I'd rather use an LA2 than a 1176.

But this is all way OT; what I'm trying to say is that 1176-type comps are not my cup of tea, they just sound way too farty IMO. The only one that I like even less is the old DBX 160.

Also, I'd rather use a Vertigo for vocals than a 1176. But that's just me.

Hey maxxxter, I'm with you. I've never been impressed with any 1176-type plugin I've tried. I just don't like this kind of compression. I don't like squashing compression and really fast attack, which is what these compressors are supposed to excel at.

Like you, I prefer the gentler and slower LA2A-ish compressors.

UGH! Jerks! - I now have decide between this new 1176 bundle (which i was quite shocked to see from UA) and the UBK-1 - both $150 each. Hmmm - if I considered buying both, that would be about the same $$ for the Ampex ATR1...maybe I should skip the comps altogether and get that lauded tape sim?...all my stars, what to do?

Seriously, I did not see UA going back to the drawing boards on these. I think we all had the sense that IK and Waves had done subsequent, newer and better versions since UA released theirs a decade ago. Slowly technology and Native caught up to them and criticism was building but UA seemed quiet about revisiting their 'classics'... to a point of being seemingly stubborn and bullheaded about only moving forward with new products. Good for them, I really want to try them and compare against their old as well as against the Waves and IK models - can't wait!

now, where can I find a quick $150?... :?

Hmmmm, so you are suggesting that our superior native version forced their hand? Interesting hypothesis...

I would point out though, even if the competition has caught up to the Black 76 (and that is a big if), we still hold the advantage on being less expensive, native, and 64-bit. ;)

Just on principle, I'm supporting maxxter. 1176s and their clowns, er, clones will rue the day they tried to compress everyone's taste into a single derivative plugin.

I declare April 5th - International 1176-Free Day. Surely, people, we can go 24 hours without using a vintage compressor emulation or starting a vintage compressor thread on KVR, can't we? Oh, wait, wrong universe. Sorry.

FWIW, I never made any judgment about the guy, I merely pointed out that his tastes are out of alignment with the majority of engineers on the planet. If he and you are true sonic rebels, you'd take that as a compliment. ;)

Yeah, maxxxter and I started our own Guild: The Oppressed Audio Engineers Society for Sonic Rebels. Sadly, it's all hiss and quantization noise at our annual general meeting. :D

You see? This is one of the things caused by all the plugins people think "model a 1176". Use a real 1176 before you use words like "farty" to describe its sound. You have no idea what you're talking about. And the disgusting smeared attack you refer to, blame the plugins. Also, if you use a 1176 (or any compressor similar to it) on a mix bus less than very sparingly and expect good results, the problem is yours, not the compressor's.
